When you think of smartphone titans the first company that comes to mind may be Samsung or Apple. But despite their record high smartphone sales, neither company has achieved what Chinese phone company Oppo has. After releasing the world's thinnest smartphone and the world's thinnest quad core smartphone, the company is back again with the world's first 1080p smartphone.

Dubbed the Oppo Find 5, the 5-inch smartphone features a whopping 441 pixels per inch (PPI), making the iPhone's 326 PPI retina display look like an Etch A Sketch toy from the 60s. Resulting in a crisp 1920 x 1080 display, the Oppo Find 5 knocks the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 out of the water. Even better, the Oppo Find 5 has just as much beauty on the inside as it does on the surface.

The device is going to ship with Android 4.1 on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor. To get an idea of how powerful this chip is, the APQ8064 easily beats the Exynos 4412-based Galaxy S III and Tegra 3-based Nexus 7 on a number of benchmarks. Other rumored specs include 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front facing camera, 16GB or 32GB of storage and a 2,500mAh battery pack.

No word on pricing or a release date just yet, but we'll keep you posted. Until then, we'll just have to hope for a global release so we can all enjoy this promising smartphone.

Oppo Unveils World's First 1080p Smartphone

Oppo has revealed its phablet competitor to the LG Intuition 4G on Verizon Wireless and the Samsung Galaxy Note on AT&T and T-Mobile USA as well as the Galaxy Note II in the form of a 5-inch smartphone called the Oppo Find 5. The device features a pixel-topping 1080p HD display in that form factor, giving it a resolution of 441 ppi. It’s unclear if the human eye can really discern anything above a 300 ppi display, but this one is definitely looking to out-retina Apple’s Retina Display on the iPhone.

The display would be a five-inch panel with a resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels. The device would compete with HTC’s rumored 1080p HD phablet with a similar 5-inch screen.

The Oppo Find 5 will be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.

Additional details are scarce on the Oppo Find 5, including whether or not the device will support 4G LTE network connectivity or if it will be limited to 3G HSPA/HSPA+.

On the part of the HTC phablet, which has the model number HTC 6435LVW, Engadget is reporting that the device will be powered by a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, which is contrary to the quad-core S4 Pro rumors we’ve heard of in the past, and also 4G LTE connectivity. That device will also support the N-Trig active digitizing technology that was found in HTC’s Flyer tablet and will give HTC’s latest tablet competitive specs to the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note II in terms of supporting pen-enabled handwriting support. Samsung says that the Note II uses active digitizing technology from Wacom.

There are a few smaller companies out there making some really cool stuff. Another that comes to mind is Pantech, which makes a smart phone and tablet that can work under water. I saw them displayed and working in a fish tank in near freezing temperatures last winter at a ski resort.

The Nokia 808 has one of the worst displays of all the flagship smartphones with a 640x360 184ppi vs 1920x1080 441ppi on the Oppo. BTW most smartphones shoot 1080p HD video like the older iPhone 4s along with the new iPhone 5.

Unfortunately, the resolution hasn't moved on from the N8, with the same 640 x 360 pixel count now stretched further, which translates to a creaky 184 ppi. It really puts the brakes on enjoying all those pin-sharp images and high-definition video, although the gallery's responsive pinch-to-zoom interface does side-step this a little. It would have been nice to see these pictures on double, if not quadruple the number of pixels, and the screen remains a curious juxtaposition with the high-end camera.

You don't understand what this thread is about, the Oppo is the first smartphone with 1080p display . Do you understand that display and video mode are two different things ? There are a myriad of smartphones that record 1080p video but none have a 1080p display. The Nokia 808 640x360 display is not even VGA like the monitors from the 80's.

1080P display on a smart phone screen, what a waste. I would have to wear a loupe to be able to pixel-peep that one. Call me an old geezer.

edit: with quad-core, does the battery pack clip to your belt or is it in a back-pack. I really hate things that must be charged daily.
