LED lighting ..... LITEPANELS ITC victory

Just to let you know a company called Litepanels holds very broad patents for solid state lighting for photographic purposes and has won in an investigation before the ITC. They ITC could now do as Litepanels asks, and allow Litepanels to block the importation of all solid state lighting for photographic purposes into the US. There is now a public comment period after the initial ruling. Please take the time to voice your concern in these developments. From a website with more information:

"The ITC complaint now being considered could ban all LED lights for video, film and photography except those made by Litepanels. The first effect is to double or triple the price of the same light as Litepanels products are priced at double of more than their competitors. The second effect is to decimate the variety of lighting and illumination instruments available to people involved in all phases of video, film and photography. The proposed exclusion wipes out the competitive LED industry, strangles consumer choice, and severely impairs American commerce. These issues will effect top Hollywood productions to students, churches, medical, law enforcement, event producers and millions more involved with video, film and photography."

Getting LEDs to a photographic light balance, or any in particular, is a non-trivial matter. I'm not that big on patent-holders sitting on whole markets, when something's needed, but this is our patent system in the most basic way it was intended to be, especially when it's very easy to make copies and counterfeits and sell them from overseas.

It may be an obsolete patent system, in many ways, and who knows about that particular company, but I'm really not seeing what *churches* have for a particular problem there, never mind Hollywood. Frankly, it's just easy to copy stuff, especially with our own industry so outsourced.

This is the flaw of the patent system - you can patent virtually anything as long as it is seemingly your idea.

It doesn't matter if it's something complex like isolating specific proteins in a cancer cell or something absurd like exercising a cat.
