Another donor scandal about to pop for Obama?

This ought to be interesting. Allegations are he found out about this article before the debate. Maybe that was the distraction, not the altitude sickness.

President Obama's reelection campaign, rattled by his Wednesday night debate performance, could be in for even worse news. According to knowledgeable sources, a national magazine and a national web site are preparing a blockbuster donor scandal story.
Sources told Secrets that the Obama campaign has been trying to block the story. But a key source said it plans to publish the story Friday or, more likely, Monday.
According to the sources, a taxpayer watchdog group conducted a nine-month investigation into presidential and congressional fundraising and has uncovered thousands of cases of credit card solicitations and donations to Obama and Capitol Hill, allegedly from unsecure accounts, and many from overseas. That might be a violation of federal election laws.

The Obama campaign has received hundreds of millions in small dollar donations, many via credit card donations through their website. On Thursday, the campaign announced a record September donor haul of $150 million.

At the end of the 2008 presidential campaign, the Obama-Biden effort was hit with a similar scandal. At the time, the Washington Post reported that the Obama campaign let donors use "largely untraceable prepaid credit cards that could potentially be used to evade limits on how much an individual is legally allowed to give or to mask a contributor's identity."

Although Chase dropped the charge, further investigation revealed a number of donations from fictional characters like Bart Simpson, Daffy Duck and King Kong, all using prepaid credit cards. Even "O. J. Simpson" donated $5 to the campaign.

"At the time," Bedard said, "the Washington Post reported that the Obama campaign let donors use 'largely untraceable prepaid credit cards that could potentially be used to evade limits on how much an individual is legally allowed to give or to mask a contributor's identity.'"

In 2008, the Post said that questions were raised when they discovered that Mary T. Biskup, a retired insurance manager from Manchester, MO., had donated $174,800 to the Obama campaign, according to FEC reports.

"Contributors are limited to giving $2,300 for the general election," the Post said.

Worse yet, Biskup told the Post she never donated to the Obama campaign and her credit card was never billed for the donations.

grubby business

Politics-a dirty business. To want to block the story is censorship. Freedom of expression is paramount. It is not suppression of the story for national security, it is suppression for political security. The slippery slope to socialism here. Here in Australia, we had the Prime Minister ring one of our conservative press newspapers to PERSONALLY threaten the entire organisation with being nuked if they printed a story of her past unethical/criminal behavior. The evidence is very compelling-I have had the opportunity to see the documents, the smoking gun so to speak. The Australian newspaper was forced to sack Glen Milne to stop him putting out the story. It is an offense under Australia law to use a carriage service for such threatening action. Once again, not national security, but their own political security. Here in Australia, we are rapidly heading away from Democracy. In the US, you had better get rid of Obama before he destroys you. The Republicans too have their fair share of traitors, so perhaps a vote for a TEA Party representative will rattle the cages of the mainstream politicians. Remember, political slur is just that-slur. Have you given any thought to "redneck" comments as being a political stunt to discredit?

Every politician deserves two terms- the first in power, the next in jail.

Politicians are like diapers. Both need to be changed regularly and for the same reasons.

The rub for secret money critics is that pulling back the curtain on such groups is harder than it looks. The DISCLOSE Act, the campaign finance transparency bill authored by Democrats on Capitol Hill, faces unanimous GOP opposition. The Federal Election Commission is hamstrung by partisan gridlock; the IRS by its aversion to political controversy.

Sorry, all just tangential to topic...

As long as they audit the Romney campaign as well. To me this sounds like it may be a campaign issue instead of an Obama campaign issue.

Ha! This is probably fairly accurate.

Daily Kos: Foreign-owned subsidiary's million-dollar contribution to Romney Super PAC raises red flags

QuoteQuote:
OdysseyRe, an insurance and investment firm, donated $1 million in August to the Mitt Romney-backing Super PAC Restore our Future. The problem? It's wholly owned by the Canadian company Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited. That raises questions of legality. But the law in such matters isn't totally clear, writes Michael Beckel at the Center for Public Integrity.
