Sandy update

The storm surge from Sandy flooded our apartment. My family is safe but we have lost nearly all of our possessions.
Everyone in our complex has been ordered out indefinitely due to unsafe conditions and lack of utilities.
Oceanside and many other South Shore Long Island communities are still without power.
We are in a Red Cross shelter and will probably remain here for the forseeable future.
We have applied for FEMA aid but available housing is now very scarce here, even hotel rooms.

Will post updates when possible...

Chris

Thanks for updating us Chris - I was thinking about you during the storm while watching on the Weather Channel. I remember your last post before the storm saying you were getting out.

It must be very difficult to be held up in a shelter and to have lost your apartment. I truly hope things start turning around for you and you can find some suitable living arrangements soon.

Chris! *latenight pouncehugs.*

I've been so worried.

It's kind of a long way, I know, but if you and your family can catch a bus, you can stay here. It's hardly the Ritz, but there's space, and I think your dampness problems outweigh mine.

(Don't get me wrong, it's kind of a basement, but you'd have to be royalty to have this kind of square footage in Manhattan.

I'm glad you're ok. Our prayers will be with you in the coming days. There are a lot of people here (Upstate) waiting to go back home. Keep us posted.

We are now in a hotel for a few days through FEMA.
After that we may be back in the Red Cross shelter.

The Red Cross is doing their best but the shelter is getting to be a bad scene.
Folks there are beginning to realize they cannot go home any time soon.

Your situation really bites. I heard on NPR the other day that FEMA is refusing to cover anyone who had flood insurance and lived in basement level apartments. They are taking the position that basements are not really for living in, but a place for a ping pong table and storage.

What?

In your area there are literally thousands of homes that have been converted to apartments. Upstairs, the main floor, and yes even the basements have been converted to actual living spaces.

To ignore what has been the standard for well over 50 years is lunacy.

And the Holiday season is upon us. Thanksgiving next week, Christmas barely more than a month off. FEMA needs to get off their dead government ass and do right by all of those who were made homeless by Sandy.

I wish you and yours the best.

Ouch, that is a difficult situation. You and your family are safe, so that's far and away the most important thing, but what a nightmare you must be going through now. Best wishes that something more stable comes along soon so that you can get your moorings and get back on track.

Though it might seem counterintuitive one area we are exploring moving to is the Rockaways,
an area hard hit by Sandy. Power has been restored there and some rentals are opening up.

We took a trip to Rockaway yesterday to look at a couple of places,
second floor apartments near the beach.
Neither were damaged inside, though both had ground floor flooding.
Both buildings now have heat, electricity and gas.

Nearly a month after Sandy the destruction throughout the Rockaways is still quite evident.
Drywall, furniture and other water damaged items are piled high at the curb for pickup.
Electric and traffic signals have not been restored in some areas.
Some major streets are still closed where heavy equipment is in use.
The elevated subway is not running; the bridge connecting to the mainland is damaged.
And everything is still coated with a thin layer of sand.

The police presence is extensive, greater than any I've seen in post 9/11 NYC.

FWIW we liked the second place and have expressed our interest. Wish us luck...

Chris

I will sign the lease today for the place on Beach 100th St in Rockaway Park.
You are all invited over for a barbecue this summer!
