Yeah... prepping for the big Post Mayan Dooms Day party on Dec 22nd...Prudence is one thing but the steps some preppers are the result of irrational paranoia.

No, I am not really into prepping. It would go against my philosophy in life, which is to try and keep a minimal amount of stuff around and make sure I actively use all of the stuff I own. I could see where some aspects of prepping could turn into fun hobbies though (i.e. growing your own food, trying to make your home self sufficient, becoming proficient with firearms, etc.)

I stay relatively prepared for hurricanes etc. and aftermath. I have a couple of Honda suitcase generators, chainsaw, Jeep, small fuel reserve etc. My first and best option where I live is to hunker down.

Fortunately the worst disaster we can really expect here in central UK is perhaps some powerlines blowing over. The longest I can remember being without power is a couple of days, after a snow storm. Oh yes and the mains water went too - I remember thawing snow out in the bath!

The worst earthquake I can remember was strong enough to wake me up convinced that my building was being hit by a truck and was going to collapse, but not enough to do any worse actual damage than knock over a few chimney pots. I have had some interesting flooding experiences, but this was while living aboard a boat, and preparedness is mandatory if you live on board.

Anything. Everything. EMPs. Dirty bombs. Oil shortage. Nuclear fallout. Worldwide economic collapse. Whatever

Why would I want or need to prepare myself or my family to live in a world that will be virtually alien to us, that will lack all of our extended non-prepping familymembers and friends (who will all be dead) and will force us to revert to living like animals and abandoning our whole system of morals in exchange for survival of the fittest, meanest and most agressive or well-armed?

I'd rather enjoy this world without spending all of my time spent on an idée-fixe. It's like the humanistic slogan on TV commercials: "I believe in a life before death"...

The problem is that governments can ban or confiscate precious metals. I have invested in lead myself.

They can confiscate lead too. Ask Diane Feinstein or Mayor Bloomberg.

The can collect lead a piece at a time. Florida state law says the can't confiscate lead or weapons in a crisis. BTW, I think Feinstein needs their overall wealth taxed at 91%.
