Dumb luck

I loaded up on dimes to feed the parking meter while doing a little photo walk today.

90 minutes costs $4.50, so I dug in my pocket and pulled out most, but not quite all, of my dimes. Exactly 45 of them.

Any other stories?

I had the same thought, but didn't want to take away from K's intended message.....I've never had to park my vehicle anywhere that needed a payment, so to hear that 90 minutes costs $4.50 just kind of blows my mind......

I do think that pulling the exact 45 dimes out your pocket is awesome, but then again I think of not only the cost, but standing there feeding 45 coins into something.

I would be lucky to dig out $4.50 in coins much less 45 dimes. I have a hard time coming up with $1.25 for the soda machine.

It was at the parking lot for the Long Beach marina and aquarium. Same price down the road at Shoreline Village shops. All-day rate is at least $8 in the aquarium parking structure. I'm not sure what regular street parking rates goes for - likely about the same.

I keep a cup of coins at home. Dimes don't work at the laundry, so I use them for parking. Only takes 2 minutes to feed them :-)

That's downright evil. $4.50 for 90 mins on a meter that only takes dimes? I'll bet they also moan about shoppers who drive 20 miles to suburban malls too.

In SF the transportation authority has installed "Smart Meters" in some locations. They are supposed to adjust rates according to demand. I can't begin to describe every problem, but the main one has to do with sensors and signals. Under the best circumstances there is a hockey puck-like sensor that is buried in the pavement under the the parking spot. It sends a wireless signal to the meter that then sends a wireless signal via satellite to a central location where conditions are analyzed and algorithms are crunched. A wireless signal is then sent back to the meter to adjust rates. Some spots need two sensors, some spots won't relay signals no matter what due to interference. It is a total mess and there are a lot of angry SF residents and business owners as a result.

No, it takes nickels on up, bills, and credit/debit cards. I wanted to use up my collection of dimes.

That's cheap compared to places like N.Y. where a monthly parking space cost as much as $1200 a month!

Parking's free. But when the ship hasn't come in and the stores have run out of soda (pop up here), we need the $4.50 for a can.

In Vancouver (and I'm sure other cities too) you can register and then pay for meters via. phone. This way, if you're in an office somewhere and your time is running out on the meter, you can call the number and they will automatically deduct from your credit card the money to pay for another two hours of parking.

There are parking meters in Vancouver that go up to $6.00 per hour, or 60 dimes if you prefer!

We've got parking meters here that you can pay using an iPhone app.
