The Case For Camera Control

To protect the children from pedophiles, we need to control the access of cameras to the public. Only credentialed journalists, the government, and a few other people with legitimate needs should have access to cameras. DSLRs are the most dangerous type of camera to children, along with the ubiquitous cell phone camera which children accidentally use to take naked pictures of themselves and send to others.

I urge you to call your congress person to insist on an immediate ban on camera technology.

But how will you be able to regulate it at camera shows where anyone can walk in and buy fully automatic cameras without any paperwork or background checks?

And there-in lies the problem. With no age restriction or FBI background checks cameras and the use there-of has gone out of control...

The American People have a right to bear lenses. But cameras should be limited to 0.5 frames per second, and memory cards to 512MB, to limit the potential harm inflicted by 'rogue photographers'.

And all disposable cameras should be hot pink in color, to be able to differentiate them from "real" ones.

OMG, this is the most disrespectful thread I've ever seen on PF. This is way too soon after the horrible incident at that school to be joking about such things. It's making me nauseous. We can only whish that the shooter only had a mere camera to his disposal, instead of his mothers guns. This thread only proves that people should have no access to guns at all. And that some people should have access to even much less.

Ever heard of a thing called black humor? It's very common in the face of tragedy and indeed it just may be the one thing that keeps us all sane when life is at it's worst. If it hurts too much to cry then what can you do but laugh? Even in the camps during WW2 there was humor. It's human nature to laugh in the face of death. We have to. It helps us survive it.

Thankyou Magkelly, I agree with you.

Mikemike isn't exactly known for his tact, but in this instance I took this thread as a comment on the endless back-and-forth gun control arguments in P&R, rather than directly in response to the school shooting situation.

Clavius... I't not really a joke. It is satire intended to point out that just as banning cameras (possession of which is not constitutionally protected) would not stop pedophiles, banning guns (possession of which IS constitutionally protected) will not prevent criminals from using guns.

Pedophiles would simply use illegal cameras just like murderers use illegal firearms.

Faulty humans are the problem... not faulty tools!

I know they would just use other cameras. The metaphore is faulty, because the use of the pictures (no matter how disgusting and wrong) will not end in the children being hurt. (Not on this scale anyway.) The use of any gun however, will always result in killing or wounding.

Moreover, I seriously doubt that the boy that did the killings last week, would go through all the trouble of getting a gun from an illegal source. If he wouldn't have had any access to his moms guns, then this wouldn't have happened.

Why can't some people grasp that a gun is a tool for killing. And that it was used exactly what it was intended for last week.

Very true, in many ways. And the only way to solve a problem is by solving the cause, not the symptoms. So the faulty humans supporting public gun access should be addressed. They are directly responsible for incidents like the one last week.

THe solution is simple, in the case of pedophile and other disgusting-phile photography. You know how fancy cameras are now, they have face recognition and they can follow someone as they move about and you can even make a composite group shot by picking the best expression for everyone in the picture. So the government must require camera makers to use this technology to discover pedophile and pornographic uses, and lock up the camera when such scenes are discovered. A photographer may purchase a license and shoot these sorts of scenery only in controlled shooting ranges.

To deal with legacy cameras, every responsible camera owner and collector knows how to store the cameras properly: in a locked cabinet, with a shutter button lock, and with film/memory cards stored in a different, secured, location. This of course defeats the main purpose claimed for having cameras at home: self defense in the form of taking pictures of anyone breaking in.

Hmm, I have many firearms, including rifles, shotguns and pistols. I even have (gasp!) an AR15, an AR10, and a couple AK47's. Yet not one of these weapons have been used for killing. They have punched a lot of holes in paper, pierced soda cans and broken clay targets, but never have they taken a life.

Are you suggesting I'm not using them for their intended purpose?

I'm not aware of the shooter having been a criminal. The whole thing about criminals is a red herring. Of the 23 mass shooting investigated by the FBI, not one was undertaken by a criminal. The question was never, how do we stop criminals from getting weapons. The question is how do we prevent the insane or mentally disturbed from getting weapons. So while a very clever satire , which I applaud, it's just another ploy to deflect attention from the main issue, which I deplore, so basically, my response is... "very funny you sicko."
