Do you have any details? With this bunch, you can bet there'll be someone with the appropriate expertise, but they might want to know what you know about your injury if any, etc. I know someone I could ask.

Did it just happen?

One of my careers a way back was as a Physical Trainer, but... Given I cannot witness the exact details I also cannot provide my true professional perspective on the matter.

But either ones own medical doctor could clearly provide the answers, as could ones current physical trainer and or licensed physical therapist. What they would most likely state, is to bend and stretch several times a week (especially before doing most types of physical work - even something that seems as relatively simple as stocking retail shelvesall the way to the other extreme - but also before any other type of physical excercise). Along with that, as good of a diet as possible, supplimented with vitamins, and a medical doctor evaluated type of excercise program.

Again, this (currently) cannot be considered as professional licensed medical advice. But should get one started in the general right direction

Have it looked at by a doctor - there are a number of causes of heel/Achilles tendon pain.
If it is a straight forward strain injury, few things aside from rest and stretching exercises as advised by physiotherapists have evidence for efficacy.
All the best in your recovery.

EDIT: forget about this below, I have found your contact info.
Do you have an email available from here at P.F. ?
I couldn't find one if you do.
Don't post it here, just send a quick message via a PM to me.

Cheers!

Achilles tendon injuries can be serious stuff.

A guy I used to work with was an avid outdoorsman, hiking, camping, climbing, hunting, skiing, blah, blah, blah. He was hiking in some remote area of the Cascade Range and somehow tore both of his Achilles tendons. They were so far out into the wilderness that one of his hiking partners stayed behind with him and the others hiked out for help. A day later the guy was flown back to civilization on a helicopter. He spent about a year recovering from the surgery to repair whatever it was that went wrong, and still walks with a hobble. He told me it was extremely painful. Why it happened the Quacks could not say, the man was very healthy, in superb physical condition (not over developed, just in great shape).

Myself, I had problems with the plantar fascia on my left foot. Bad stuff, and the Quack I saw said it was exacerbated by a very tight Achilles tendon. Ultimately the plantar fascia was cut surgically, but I still have painful symptoms, and my right foot is also becoming troublesome.

Life is not always fair, and it really bites when our bodies begin to give up on us. I am only 56, the plantar fascia surgery was about 15 years ago. I had my left hip totally replaced last year with a Titanium, ceramic and plastic unit (actually has worked out quite well), and this year I had Carpal Tunnel surgery on my right hand. Next up may be some neck and low back spinal repair, but I am still unsure if I wish to proceed with it, as the results are not very good generally. I ran hard in my younger days, and I am paying for it now.

It is Hell to get old.

Like the others have mentioned, consult with a specialist. Find a good one, there are a couple out there.

I wish you the best of luck with your condition.

Every few days I wear a pair of Earth (that is the brand) shoes. They have a negative heel (Kalso is the trademarked name) that helps keep the Achilles tendon stretched out. Shoes with heels probably do the exact opposite. Unfortunately after having reintroduced the Earth brand a few years back, they no longer produce mens shoes.

It was strange reintroduction for a brand with a cult following back in the 70's. They started out reintroducing a couple of old styles and a couple of new styles. Then they went on to produce about 30 different styles including athletic shoes. That lasted for 3-4 years. Then they stopped producing them altogether. The numbers for womens shoes were even larger, but I believe that they may have stopped producing those as well.

Tendons take a long time to heal because of low blood circulation in them, If the pain is at the heel don't mess with it and go to a doc. If you tear it badly it will take a long miserable time to heal. Not something to leave without professional care.

Unsheathed mine once, it was more than sore then, though, and took a long time to heal. Definitely see a doctor.

When I was dancing I pulled mine and ended up on crutches for 8 weeks. It was very painful so you do have my sympathies. But you do need to see a doc and a physical therapist probably. Without the PT mine probably would not have healed right they said. That tendon can be a pain even after it heals. Mine still gets sore once in a while and it was years ago...
