Paypal Lessons Learned the Hard Way

In case you weren't aware, I recently leaned that if you accept a transaction from a NON-US paypal account, paypal charges an EXTRA 1% cross border fee.

I'm not sure how that works if the you the seller is in another country, but it just cost me about $12 in fees, even though the SHIPPING address is US, becuase the paypal account was setup as a NON-US account, I have to eat the additional fee.

The moral of the story, when selling I guess I now have to ask about country of origin of account OR start factoring in 4% fees from this point forward

Wrong forum, but yeah, PayPal fees vary for international transactions. The rates for some countries are higher than others.

An easy thing to do is to just increase your asking price by 5% and disguise the fee that way. Buyers really don't like it when they have to add fees on top of a total that they previously thought included everything.

Thanks for sharing this info. Those who have read your post have now just learned this lesson the easy way.

What Adam says is true - it's best to absorb all the extra costs in your initial asking price instead of making a song and dance about it (I'm not saying you are). Discretion makes for a better and smoother transaction, and that shall be my approach from now on. We don't need to advertise our overheads do we?

There sure are, but they're not as secure for the Buyer. Wire transfer, cash, money order/cashier's check, personal check. But these offer no recourse if the Seller decides to keep both the money AND the item for sale.

Amazon also has a payment service but I don't know any of the details about it.

PayPal always *devalues* almost AU$0.03 off of The Australian Dollar when I buy OS as well.

In my recent research into buying a Ukrainian Kiev 88 camera from a refurbishing company there, the preferred method of payment is something called Moneygram. Companies there seem to like Moneygram so much they are willing to discount their goods to keep their customers from using Paypal. The difference I see is that the SENDER pays the 3% transaction fee, not the person getting the money. Maybe there's some sort of advantage in regards to income reporting for the merchant.

I wound up buying my camera from a well known Ukrainian dealer on Ebay, so I ended up doing Paypal.
