I hope nothing else happens today...

I thought that I would go out and do some shooting with the Q - perhaps some time lapse at sundown. I was already to go, but could not find my truck keys. I had them the other day when I came back from Costco. We looked everywhere - still could not find them. The only thing that comes to mind is that perhaps some how they fell in to the cardboard boxes from Costco that were thrown out - and the trash pickup was yesterday morning.

So, while we were looking for the keys, our son decided to start dinner. He had a pot of water boiling for some pasta, and then all of a sudden a large sound of breaking glass. The cooktop shattered - it was old, but not ancient. Well dumped the water and started vacuuming up the glass and my wife announces that she wants gas - nothing but gas. I say something like the floor will need to be cut and jack hammered out to get a gas line in from the garage, which means the tile floor will need to be ripped out. Also, we will need a vent and hood through the roof. Then she adds that well you might as well rip out the cabinets, rip the laundry room and bathroom out while you are at it - since they all have the same tile - so that the cabinets and new counter tops will all match.

She was looking at kitchen stuff on her laptop when it died. So I had to go look at it. It seems like the battery pack went bad - to which she exclaimed, well just go over to Best Buy and get me another. It was 9pm - as I told her that they were closed, and that they probably would not have a replacement anyway. So, she went and requisitioned our son's so that she could continue her kitchen surfing.

So, from what I see - I can take the VIN over to the Dodge dealer and get a replacement. I can get the battery pack re-built easily enough. The kitchen - there is no way that I am going to drop $30-$50K on a new kitchen. Over my dead body.....

I am going to bed before something else happens.

If you aren't going to spend the money for the kitchen, do yourself a favor and spend a grand or so on a nice comfy sofa.
You may not have many more nights sleeping in that bed for a while.

Gas appliances require a bit more maintenance then electric.

The newer ones don't have pilot lights like the old ones. They have clicker sparkers that seem to flake out. The ones I have used take 2-3 tries before they will light sometimes. Gas also doesn't give you as even heating either.

On the up side, gas should be a little bit cheaper than electric.

The newer electric glass top stoves are quite nice, although I still don't like how they seem to become stained quite easily.

We actually have a pretty old electric stove at our house - probably from the 80s or early 90s. The pans under the heating elements are the only thing I have replaced since we bought the house.

What a rotten night. I think we should commiserate. Yesterday I found out I have pneumonia in both lungs after having to fight with a specialist who wouldn't accept I had a problem until another doctor ordered an X-ray. It was an interesting day yesterday.

Your rotten night beats mine by several miles. Double pneumonia is a hard recovery - especially when a specialist will not really do their job. A speedy recovery and Get Well soon!!

Have your wife give a good look at higher powered induction cooktops - they can be as fast as gas and you can control temperature better. You can't use glass or any non-magnetic cookware but the new ones are really amazing.

We converted to gas when we did a kitchen upgrade 8 years ago. We'd had gas when we lived on Norfolk Island and my wife liked it so we changed after our return to Australia. We've had no problem with gas. I just asked my wife and she reckons gas gives more even heating with better and instant control.

Can't you bring the gas in through the walls rather than trenching the concrete floor?

You have my sympathies!

The stove that came with our house was electric, glass top. We had planned on replacing it, eventually, when the top cracked. So, let's see about a replacement top, so that the stove would have some resale value. Ha! $350. plus installation! So, we bought a Jenn-Air downdraft duel fuel stove with convection oven. Well, the oven is wonderful, but...overall the purchase was one of the worst I've ever made. All the burners are the same size, so a simmer is difficult, and bringing a 12 quart stock pot to a boil takes ... forever! It has a grill cartridge, but the heat output is not really adequate. And to top it off the downdraft feature, a factor in its purchase since running a duct to the outside would entail fairly major work, isn't very effective.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR................

BTW, it seems impossible to find a deluxe stove without lots of electronic circuitry. If the boards go you have an expensive repair, assuming that the manufacturer still has them available. What ever happened to simple switches?? I've heard horror stories about Jenn-Air's inability to furnish such parts for stoves only a few years old. On our stove the oven, as far as I can see, would be useless if the board gets fried. And there is a special little fan to prevent that, assuming that the fan doesn't pack it in.

We do plan to redo the kitchen, but I feel I've/we've wasted the cost of that miserable stove. My advice is avoid Jenn-Air. I wish I could offer a ringing endorsement of another stove, but my suggestion is to ask friends who've bought a stove recently. That, and Consumers' Research, although I take a jaundiced view of a lot of their ratings.

Sorry for the rant/vent, but the stove really is a piece of c**p!

I don't blame her. Electric stoves suck. Glad we're back to gas in our new place. Nothing cooks like fire.

Run the gas line through the attic instead. That's how mine and every house in my neighborhood is run.
