The house is gonna' be rockin' tonight!

What a find on Craig's List! A pair of rare, old-school, Yamaha NSA94DY tower speakers! Genuine oak, 40" towers w/ crossover network & bass reflex ports, 140 watts of power. $35.00 for the pair, like new! Gonna' have the neighbors either complainin' or joinin' the party tonight!

They look good and I hope they sound good too.
I have four old Avids in my office from 1978.
I had to replace the tweeters in the 3 way larger pair with units from MCMelectronics.com.

I just bought some vintage speakers too, Design Acoustics model PS-10a.
They're small, about a 1 foot cube, with an uncommon down-firing woofer.

The woofer foam edges are rotted, like so many 20-30 year old loudspeakers.
I plan to refoam them myself, my first attempt at doing so. It looks fairly easy.
I bought the wrong kit though, and now I'm waiting for the exchange to arrive.

I love old speakers like that. I'm running a pair of Fisher Studio Standard 15" three ways in the front and a pair of Technics 12" three ways in the back off of a Yamaha surround reciever. I've only had the neighbors complain once .

The speakers were paired with a NOS Kenwood 300 Watt amp/receiver and I turned it up so loud the windows started rattling.... and no distortion! And.... the bass kicks butt, too! I love the THUMP, THUMP, THUMP! You feel it as much as you hear it. It's been a long time since I've heard that kind of sound. Deep, rich, booming bass, nice warm mid-tones and crisp, sharp highs. It's impossible to get that from bookshelf speakers. As they say, "There's no replacement for displacement!"

Lynyrd Skynyrd is rockin' the Dewman's house tonight! Sweet Home Alabama ROCKS!

Re-foaming is quite easy with the right kit. Highly satisfying to restore old speakers too. A while ago I rescued a pair of original large Advents from a friend's dump-run pile. New foam surrounds, grill cloth, and finishing oil on the walnut transformed them into heaven. I prefer the sound of 1970s speakers.

Very nice speakers Dewman, I run a pair of Klipsch LaScalas perhaps we need to sync up an album and turn them to 11, we could drive everyone out of this side of the state!

A previous owner of these speakers was obviously a smoker.
Dirtex cleaner easily remove the coating of tar on the cabinets.
Lo and behold underneath it all the vinyl finish was like new.

Here's what they'll look like - once I get some houseplants! :

You can see the down-firing woofer in the gap at the bottom of the cabinets.
They have good bass and a very well-balanced sound in a small speaker.

I refoamed my woofers today...

As suggested it's not hard to do but it is time consuming; 3 one hour drying periods are required.
Removing the glue holding the old foam to the frames was the most difficult part, involving much scraping.

The recommended isopropyl alcohol was not very effective to soften and remove the old glue.
When I switched to nail polish remover (acetone) things went much quicker.

Essentially scented Acetone (unless you got the new kind that doesn't dry the cuticles). A quart of Acetone is usu. less expensive than a few onces of nail polish remover - and a female somewhere won't complain.

Acetone is also handy if you ever use Gorilla Glue (polyurethane). Or the Great Stuff expanding insulation in a spray can, very similar stuff. Before the glue dries on your hands and leaves black marks that last until the skin falls off, use acetone liberally.

My grandson spent the weekend and we wreaked havoc on the new speakers! From Lynyrd Skynyrd to The Beatles, we rocked the night away! He cracked up when I began playing the air guitar. Didn't know grandpa had those moves! (In all reality, I probably looked like an old fool, but I was havin' fun.) When my daughter came to pick him up, she said, "Dad, you're never gonna' grow up, are you!" "Nope," says I.

At any rate, the new Yamahas really are great and I just can't seem to get enough of that awesome bass thump, much to the dismay of my dog!

My Logitech PC speakers have a sub-woofer that is down-firing and has a bass reflex port that faces forward and it works to perfection. It's small.... about the size of two cigar boxes, side-by-side .... but the sound is totally out of proportion to its size. Every piece of Logitech equipment I've ever bought has been first rate goods. Their wireless mouse is great.

I am completing my "throwback" stereo system with a Nikko integrated amplifier and Sharp (Optonica) analog (flywheel) tuner, both made in 1978.
Back then, the year I started college, my local audio store discouraged people like me from entering the sound room where they kept the separates.
