Dana, I am so ashamed of you! Bet you never thought old Rupert would catch you in your filthiness?

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on one machine and AVG on two others. Both seem to work very well.....combined with Malwarebytes Premium I seldom ever have anything get through, and then it is only minor trash.
Of course, I never ever roam around those "Naughty" sites.......

Regards!

I don't know what happened when you tried Kapersky. I have been using it for years, issue free. It was faster and less of a resource hog than anything else I had used. I had the same issues with Microsoft Essentials. I picked up a few viruses while running it and what was worse, some malware the software found, it couldn't remove or quarantine. All of the software you mentioned I use and is currently on my computer. You might want to contact customer service to sort out the problem. When you first install any AV software, there is usually a very long period of updating definitions. You'll find that with everybody. First you download the program and install it. Then, all the definitions have to be installed and usually it will do a full scan of your machine which could take a few hours. I haven't gone through this process in a few years. I just keep my subscription up every year and I run regular scans overnight from time to time.
I'm the same, been on Kapersky for years now, initial instal on any software takes time (updates and initial scan) I went to kapersky after having to do a full restore to wipe out some particularly nasty malware. I went kapersky on the advice of half a dozen IT managers I know who all suggested the same thing. At work we use a custom program derived from Kapersky (did at my previous job as well)
Once it's installed and has swept the system it takes little maintenance well worth the effort IMO (never had any issue using any software due to it - Photo software I have LR, DXO, Paintshop Pro, Photoshop.... All work fine with it
I found Norton and Mcafee were really bloated software particularly the suites, completely slowed down everything

I have been on mac for 5-6 years now with nothing on it and never had a problem
this is changing as Mac gains market share - you couldn't infect enough computers previously to be of interest. I have a friend who is a Mac IT specialist and he is spending a lot of time dealing with issue. his own macs now run AV and Anti Malware software apparently - Kapersky is the software of choice in the mac world as well apparently

In fact because macs have not been attacked a lot they haven't been great at plugging potential exploits
that too is changing

I used to use Kaspersy. It started giving me an error code every few days and telling me to re-install it. I used the link in the error message to contact kaspersky. They couldn't tell me what the error code meant. I switched to Norton.

Microsoft Security Essentials... never had any performance issues... or "bug" issues... running it on all my computers for the past 3-4 years.
Is free and constantly updated from Microsoft.

As for Mac users who think Mac's can't have viruses or be "hacked"... keep on dreaming.
Mac computers can get viruses just as fast and easy as a Windows computer. Is just that they weren't that many around to be of interested... the more they sell, the more they become a target.

I used AVG Free for years and then found out I had quite a few viruses on my PC and I switched to Avast! Free. So far so good except it keeps popping up asking me to upgrade.

I kind of feel like if anyone wants to bug your computer, they can do it if they have the skills and technology. I learned this from my brother-in-law about 6-8 years ago when he could tell me everything on my computer and every site I had visited....as he arrived at our house for a short visit. No, he had never been on my computer, never swapped mail or otherwise connected. He said he could do it from a range of up to 15 miles. He retired from the CIA about a year before that visit. Who knows what things he couldn't tell me?

You do the best you can and hope you are protected, but it's still an iffy situation I do believe.

Regards!

I've used ESET in the past and liked it very much.
"my best" was not to use Windows any longer

Cheers

Been using Norton for years - currently Norton Internet Security for our 3 machines.

I was using the Microsoft Essentials on my wife's computer until she got a trojan last year - it totally missed it.

Many years ago Norton was a huge resource hog. But since I've been back to it it runs seamlessly in the background. And as far as cost, they've been doing much better lately. I used to watch for sales at retailers to get my new yearly subscription. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Norton themselves offered it to me for $20 this time around. $20 protecting 3 computers is quite a deal. And it hasn't missed anything yet.

As a preventative, I also run Malwarebytes manually (free version) once a week on all the machines - never found anything yet. That also gives me confidence that Norton is doing its job.

When I used Windows, I used Kaspersky and never had any problems. It was worth the inconvenience of the original download. That said, there's no substitute for good operating practices that include staying away from questionable sites, being very careful about file sharing and not opening any e-mails that you don't recognize. My hardware is all Mac now. And while it's all more resistant to viruses and malware than Windows, nothing is 100 percent safe. That's why good operating practices still apply.
