Rupert,
Those are border collies and other herding breeds. They are famous for their energy levels. They are used to herding sheep and cattle all day. Their disposition makes them good pets, but this assumes that you give them 2 to 3 hours of good exercise every day. Not just walks. Fetching Frisbees is a great way to keep them amused. They love doing stuff like that. If they are not working they are not happy. They will get depressed if they are kept inactive too long.
If you have a bunch of little kids in the yard, they will keep watch over the mob and try to keep them together. If one breaks free they will chase after them to get the child to return to the protection of the herd. Some would misinterpret this as aggressive behavior but it is simply the way they are programmed.
Awesome dogs with more energy that a room full of 2 year olds.
I once had a six-week-old puppy, half Jack Russell, half Australian Shepherd, and the first day we had him home with is, he tried herding my wife against the dishwasher! We died laughing! R.I.P., Jackson. We lost him to a Mt. Lion when we lived in the Rocky Mts., north of Boise. A magnificent dog. I still miss him, even 12 years later.
