Anyone who knows me well knows I have an almost unholy lust for all things labradorite/spectrolite. As stones go I am totally obsessed with the stuff and in particular with labradorite skulls. I have several labradorite rings and pendants that I wear practically all the time. When I go to the gem show twice a year inevitably I come back with more labradorite beads and cabochons to play with. I just can't leave this particular stone alone. Labradorite is just MY stone and has been ever since I first set eyes on one a decade or so ago. For me wearing labradorite it's like wearing the ocean, and the ocean is something I have a hard time living without as I am very salt water oriented. I do wear other stones. I am also very fond of clear quartz, garnets, peridots, carnelian, and amethysts but those I mostly wear occasionally while my labradorite stuff is almost never off me.
The skull fetish is a general thing but the one 3" labradorite skull I own I'm seriously possessive of it. It's the only decent sized one I've ever been able to afford. I've managed to get some crude labradorite skull beads for earrings and some labradorite skull pendants to wrap, but a skull cabochon for setting in a ring or a ring with one already set in it always eluded me because the price tags were prohibitive and I'm truly picky besides. Most of the little labradorite skulls I've seen, they were pricey and less than inspiring. Mostly they looked a bit demonic and that was a look I just did not want for mine. I was looking to make something in the mourning jewelery vein not a biker piece. Well, I finally found me a pretty, nicely flashed one and what do you know it only cost me $12 shipped! 25mm, just about the perfect size and I know someone who will set it for me in sterling for a very reasonable price too.
I am a very happy camper right now, grin. This is my precious, my lovely labradorite momento mori, a decade and more in the making. Isn't it just beautifully morbid? (I know bad pic, but I'll take another one when it actually arrives.) Once I get this thing made it's probably going to be on my finger till I'm in the morgue myself.
It's near perfect though, IMHO. Just look at those little teeth, such detail for such a little piece!
