How the Kumquat fruit got its name

How the Kumquat got its name

Back in the 1800’s Orphus Quat explored the Asia –Pacific area. He landed on one of the islands in the Pacific and made friends with the natives. They shared many different kinds of food there and one type was a very tasty fruit. Orpheus was so impressed with the fruit that he took some of it back to England with him. On his second voyage to the same island he spotted the natives in boats that were full of the fruit rowing out to meet him chanting “ Here come Quat” and that is how it got its name “ Kumquat”

The Cantonese would be surprised to hear that. The name comes from "kum" (golden) "quat" (good fortune) which is why it is prominent at Chinese New Year. Good image though.

And though that's a nice photo and nice story, those aren't Kumquat. Kumquat is a citris fruit, while what you've got there is a Loquat (locally known as Japanese Plum).

I have one of each plant in my yard.

The image is of a pome fruit, loquat. They have a very large seed in the middle. Ripen mid to late spring, and are eaten by peeling the skin. They result in a brown stain on the hands from the juice. Taste good.

PJ1,
Thanks.

I just made up the story. Maybe the Cantonese would find it amusing. The first reference to the fruit was in the 12th century by the Chinese..

Photo Lady,

You are correct. I wondered who would notice it. The story would not work with " Here loquat "

Tim60,

It is in the citrus family and is tasty. A lot of work for such little fruit. We have eaten them for many years. the plant is at least 40 years old as it was in our yard when we bought the house in 1975. We almost lost it during a hard freeze here in Houston TX. a few years back but it is a hardy plant.
