High bidder with no feedback in Thailand?

Ug.

I'm selling some old cameras for a friend. The sweet little Spotty 2 has a single bid on it with one day left. It's from in Thailand with no feedback. I said that I'd ship internationally, but... no feedback to Thailand?

I sell on eBay about once every ten years. Is it kind of a jerk move to cancel someone's bid? Should I just let it play out? What sort of protections do I have through eBay? I would be shipping through eBay's international shipping service if I sent it out over the pond(s).

The current price is more or less what it's worth so no reason to hope for a bidding war in the last ten seconds.

I've never sold thru EBay; can you legitimately cancel a sale when there is a bidder? I would check this out before you decide on cancelling.

Dumb question, but... how can you get screwed? I'm assuming that you only ship after receiving payment (and it clears)?

Sorry for the newbish question, but I have some stuff that I've been meaning to sell.

For the cancel question - Canceling Bids and Listings - Sell Better on eBay

For the get screwed bit - a buyer pays with PayPal, money is received, you ship.
Buyer waits until your timeframe to file a lost shipment claim with carrier expires, then files a refund claim with PayPal that they never received the items. PayPal sides with buyer even after you show on line evidence the buyer has done this to others under different accounts.
Money is refunded to buyer and they get your goods for free.

I've been selling with no problems on ebay many years but sellers have lost a lot of protection lately.

I went ahead and canceled it.

Yeah, I buy and sell a bit in a Facebook swap group and have heard that Paypal has been terrible lately about siding with the buyer even when the seller has tracking information. Not a fight I want to put up over a $50 camera when I'm not even taking a cut.

That sounds terrible. Is there any seller recourse via shipping insurance?

Possibly but in this case I had grown complacent with not keeping my tracking info due to record of good transactions.
When I went on line to find the info it was purged.
You do have 60 days to file a claim with USPS.

Main thing is if you are going to sell on line keep all your records and be very suspicious of a transactions that don't seem legit.

And send it signed receipt. That way you will have a signature of who received the item and when.

I thought Paypal had a 30 day limit or something on claims. Sending signature required might help.

This is a USPS rule and I am sure UPS and FedEx, you must also print name along with signing your name. I think FedEx also ask you what your name is after signing.

Yup, seller protection is dramatically worse now than it was a few years ago. It's strongly in favor of the buyer now. I've greatly reduced my eBay selling lately due to this.

I've never been asked to also print my name, when signing for packages from USPS (even at the post office), UPS, or FedEx. Time is money to them and they want to get the delivery done with as soon as possible, and move on to the next delivery.

A good thread to post this warning again.....Never, ever buy anything on E-bay or anywhere else that is being sold by Otis Squirrel...O. Squirrel....Otis S......or anything similar.

Here is one of the ads by "Farmer Otis" he ran last year...

"I am a poor peanut farmer and have a bounty crop this year but peanut prices are down and my family is going to starve if I can't sell my entire crop. I am passing on the savings to others that enjoy fine Grade A roasted peanuts. These are paw ...I mean, hand sorted for size and perfect shells, no cracks or split shells. All roasted in the natural sun for full delicious flavor and no salt added for a healthy and delicious snack you can share with your friends and family. Help my family and make your family smile.....watch that Super Bowl with all the fresh roasted peanuts you and your buddies can eat for a price that is thousands below market value! Delivered to your door by my truck, no matter where you live in America (excludes Alaska and Hawaii). Yes a truckload of peanuts, filled to the top...for only $250. US currency. Paypal accepted!"

Sounds great to me, so I ordered, thinking I can enjoy and feed the rest to my Jays and squirrels. What could go wrong?

This is what I got in a tiny box a few days later.....and Paypal sided with the seller. They said I got what was advertised and even made me return the truck, which was noted, belonged to the seller. I assume it went on to deliver many more shipments of fine roasted peanuts.

Regards!...you were warned!

How many of you won't admit it, but got burned here on the Marketplace with this ad by "Optical Otis"?

"Want to have a perfect photo every time....a great like-new K5IIs for only $200! Hurry! It won't last long at this price!"

What you got was a great photo...of a K5IIs!

Fortunately, I was able to cut off Otis' annual beer money and he returned the cash to all the buyers......I won't mention your names here, I do understand how it feels to be ripped of...by a damn squirrel!

Be careful out there, scammers abound!
