As a youngster my dad said he would never allow us kids to ride a motorcycle. And then my uncle bought one (Honda 90).

So, I started riding motorcycles in the desert at this time of year in 1968, age 11, and off-roading has remained my first love ever since.

Last year I logged 60 separate days riding, on a MX track or in the desert.

Sold my only sportbike some years back as I just didn't have time for it, though I have owned a number of and still own a dual-sport bike even now.

EDIT: My wife had never been on a motorcycle before she met me...she's been riding off-road for 33 years, now, and we're headed out to the desert tomorrow (Mother's Day).

Over my mother's strong objections, I bought a used Honda CB-200 and rode it for a couple of years during college. Moved up to a Used Suzuki Gs-425, which I rode and thoroughly enjoyed for a couple more years. Not long after I went on active duty in the USAF, traded up to a Honda CX-500 liquid cooled V twin shaft drive. Loved that bike! Got a few more years of riding, then kids came along, well you know the story... Still have my M endorsement though! Have to be a bike big enough to tow a kayak trailer, though... 😎

Glad you're okay and the Sporty is back in action. I hope to reach my 50th anniversary someday, quite an achievement. I had two of those GS450 Suzukis, faired and unfaired, one after the other. Loved them. Was your son in law's the one with the quarter fairing or naked?
No fairing, just naked except for a sissy bar. He originally left it with me to fix up for my daughter to ride. He totally neglected even basic maintenance and the chain wore a hole through the case. A proper fix was beyond my welding skills and I didn't think replacing the motor or even tearing it down and getting a used case was worth it. The guy I gave it to restores old bikes for vintage shows. He won't be riding it so the bad engine case can just be filled with epoxy.

Aaaahhhhh. The days of blaring down i40 at 100 mph wearing flip flops and shorts are long gone. That was the nicest thing I ever owned ( sold when got married to help us buy a house). Honda vlx. I made sure I had 1.2 million in life insurance.

Bike gone. Wife gone. I still have my MC endorsement. I'm 50 with a 4 year old. I doubt I return to it do to the danger and having so far to go with so little time.

I hope to get my 87 crx going again. I bought it new and it's in junkyard condition now. The feeling is close, but not quite eh .....

You didn't think the claim would get denied due to 'negligence' or having a 'will to die'?

You trust those insurance guys a lot more than I do!

Europe 1967.

On our way over the Austrian Alps then to Turkey, the Near East, North Africa, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar from Ceuta Morocco to Algeciras Spain then through Spain, France, London and finally Stateside. Sold the Beemer with 62000 miles on it for more then we paid for it new at the factory in Munich Germany. Still married to the same women who rode with me then.

Memories......

Wow. Nice. I made it 300 ft around our circle with my new wife at the time before she started screaming and punching me invite middle of the back. 20 mph. Put for sale after that.

I taught my new wife to ride on one of these BSA Bantams in 1970.

This is her last bike, a Honda CB400ABS (in front of my XJR1300 and Suzuki V-Strom)

At only 4-feet-11 tall, my wife's two-wheeled choices are always rather limited, we thought it best that she bypass the pavement.

You know, I think- especially after seeing the photo of the old BSA on the stand- that one of the things I have missed most about motorcycles is those unexpected stops at some old, newly discovered, bike shop. There are few things more interesting than a garage full of old bikes.

I was only 5'2". Most of my bikes had to be lowered, especially the Gold Wing, so I could safely touch the ground with both feet.
