I just got back from a trip to Connecticut for my brother's 60th birthday, three years older than me. My sister had a trivia game to see who knew the most about him, and the big question was to name all the cars he's owned. The total number was 12. No one got more than 9. Company cars (about five) were excluded. We had to remind him of a few. It made me feel better about lenses, that's for sure! The list was:
Pontiac Phoenix, Dodge Omni, Plymouth Shadow (all former rental cars)
Chevy S10 Blazer, Mitsubishi Montero, Jeep Cherokee, Chevy Spectrum (all with salvage titles, slight profit for this period)
Ford Ranger, Ford Taurus, Ford Focus (the Ford period)
Nissan Pathfinder (another stab at an SUV, still not happy)
Subaru Forester (current car, a 2010 I think)

Interesting to make a list of how many vehicles one might have in life, especially when you find yourself well down life's road, like me. I've had quite a few cars and motorcycles.

I note your brother had a Pontiac Phoenix. I had one and although they were not regarded highly, being one of the infamous X cars, mine was one of the best vehicles I ever had.

It was an LJ model, 2 dr. sedan...with pillow seats, the optional 2.8 liter V6. It was a 100% reliable, durable...no issues at all. Very comfortable with fairly good zip and handling. When I got married, my wife didn't want to drive her Ford Granada any more, as she enjoyed driving the Poncho so much.

We were sad to see it go. We traded it in on a 4 door station wagon when we had kids...it wasn't easy to crawl in the back seat to fasten the kids into their car seats.

60 and only 12?! I got that beat.

If we count everything,

1958 Allstate Moped
1972 Kawasaki 100 Centurion
1974 Honda XL125
1973 Plymouth Road Runner
1972 Dodge Pickup
1977 Jeep CJ5
1976 Toyota Land Cruiser
1972 Pontiac Lemans GTO
1979 Dodge Ramcharger
1974 Plymouth Fury
1970 Plymouth Cuda
1984 Ford T Bird
1982 Pontiac Trans Am
1984 Jeep Cherokee 2 door
1987 Jeep Cherokee 4 door
1989 Ford Pickup Club Cab
1999 Tahoe
1989 Chevy Pickup 2wd
1989 Chevy Pickup 4wd
1975 Honda XL125
1976 Honda XL 175
1975 Honda XL350
2002 Chevy Avalanche
2000 Honda 750
2006 Ford Mustang
2006 Chevy Avalanche
2018 Chevy Pickup Crew Cab

I think that's all of them.

Adding in my wife's before we got married,

1972 Honda SL100
1970 Barracuda
1970 Challenger
1973 El Camino
1974 Firebird

And probably a couple more I don't remember and doesn't count her horses.

I eventually bought myself a new MINI Cooper in early 2000. That was followed by a MINI Cooper S and then a Cooper S John Cooper Works. I loved that car to bits and still miss it terribly.
Got a buddy that has one of these, he loves it. He used to race autocross so I guess this is his old age "racer".

I bet you that one is still rolling down some road... those were beauties! If I find one of those from the 1980s at the right time right price, I will pounce.

I'm sure of it. We ran out of room with a 6'2" son, a 5'6" daughter, a Sheltie and assorted friends ... so we bought the people hauler Toyota Van LE.

I'm a person who researches a new car exhaustively, and then sticks with it for a long time. I'm 48, and here are the cars that have been my daily drivers:

1. 1988 Chevy Beretta
2. 1995 Eagle Talon
3. 2005 Mini Cooper S
4. 2014 Audi S4

All manual transmissions. So at the usual rate I'll have a new car in 4-5 years. I kind of like 5, 6, 7 years of no car payments.

My wife and I have been together since 2002 and she's had a Honda Civic, Ford Mustang convertible, Mitsubishi Endeavor, Subaru Outback, Toyota Sienna, Jeep Wrangler... and we inherited a 2003 Dodge Dakota from my father-in-law to haul trash and mulch.

Oh, and I almost forgot my non-functional toy in the garage. I've owned a 1963 split-window Corvette coupe in Sebring Silver since 2001. But it hasn't run since about 2010. Would love to have the time and the $50k+ to get it back in top shape. Maybe one day.

What is the story behind your Goliath...Borgward, I'm assuming ? Were you living or stationed in the military in Germany ? How did you like it, strong points and not so strong points of this automobile.

Fascinating name...Goliath. I recall a Borgward Isabella in my town, back in the '60's The dealer sold Borgwards, as well as Czechoslovakian made Jawa and CZ motorcycles.

In 1986 a coworker bought a 1967 Pontiac GTO with big plans to restore it.
Then he got married. I don't have to tell you the rest of the story.

Until 2012 (when I moved and no longer drove past his house)
it was still sitting in his driveway covered by a canvas tarp...

Interesting exercise.

1967 VW Squareback
1970 Audi 100LS
1976 MGB (gave to pre-mrs-monochrome to keep my stubborn, manipulative mother out of it)
1980 Plymouth Horizon (Traded the MG of course)
1980 Chevy Citation
1984 S-10 Blazer
1986 Impala SS and a car seat
1988 Volvo 240 DL and another car seat
1992 Ford Club Wagon van

2000 Honda Passport
2004 Subaru Outback
2007 Honda Accord (son totaled)
2009 Honda Accord
2012 Honda Accord
2015 Mini Cooper

Wow. So few American cars. They were all pretty crappy vehicles compared to the Volvo, Subaru and Hondas.

The Goliath 1100 was my first car and the one I learned to drive with a manual transmission. I got the car when I was 18 after my folks moved to SLC. It was a pretty good little car and got around in the winter really well compared to the big iron because of its front wheel drive. It had a liquid cooled boxer four cylinder engine and four-out-of-the-dash shifter. It deserved better than me trying to learn on it. And now I'm driving more liquid cooled boxer four cylinder engine cars.
