We just bought a 2007 Golf. It's the "City Golf" sold in Canada, basically a Gen 4 Golf made in Brazil with a few upgrades. It was sold as the entry level VW in Canada alongside the current versions with the old 2.0L aspirated engine.
My kids wanted a car with stick shift and this very clean, leak free & rust free car became available. First thing I did was pay for the timing belt to get replaced as it had 162,000 km on the odometer -- recommended service is 180,000 km for timing belt change but I'm not taking any chances. This is an infamous maintenance item on this generation of VW's. The belt is $60 and labor was 4 hours!
We have had Beetles, Golfs, Jetta, Passat in my family over the years. Also Mazda, Toyota, GM, Ford, Chrysler. No Subaru though.
