Yeah, I seem to have a real penchant for such things, don't I? Not really a reputation I was wanting, but I guess I'm a little too outspoken and a little risque' for some folks. But, I'm a firm believer in "My house, my rules."

"Joint" base, lol, considering he was on a pot farm.

We had people run away back in the 80s. I didn't mind it at all they were generally useless anyway. I don't even think the man chased them. Just wrote them off. Not sure though.

But running away because you are homesick is different than joining the enemy.

People desert for any number of reasons, the toll war takes on soldiers is unimaginable to those who've never experienced it. Let's withhold judgment on this guy until all the facts are out.

That would make him a defector, not a deserter. Highly unlikely the US would trade prisoners for a defector, don't you think.

I also don't agree with calling him a coward, mentally weak perhaps, but would a coward even join the service in the first place? The guy cracked for whatever reason. In my mind, I'd rather he walked away than to fold under pressure during an attack leaving his partner to fend for himself.

As I recall, when the trade happened, there wasn't a definitive conclusion whether he was a defector or deserter.

In 2010, a Pentagon investigation concluded he walked away from his post (desertion). This was long before the trade took place. I believe the only "loose ends" at the time of the trade was exactly what charges would be levied against him.

Not sure. I don't think there can be a defector in what we have declared WWIII. He's either a POW we welcome him home or he is Taliban like the shoe bomber.
