This is a tough one.
A new processor for my spare MSI z170 M5 motherboard... maybe.

A conundrum I face as well, only with my main desktop. Replace the MB, processor and video cards or go all new.

Well, if we're talking computer stuff... getting an i7-4670k for my sweetie's PC. A couple months ago her PSU failed, and took the motherboard and CPU with it, so right now she's "limping" with an overclocked Intel Pentium G3258 (that's the unlocked Anniversary Edition). Will also be upgrading my brother's system to i7-6700k for Christmas. Fortunately I'm less than an hour's drive from Micro Center.

I am an hour and 20 away from one. That place is dangerous!
p.s: that 6700k is a beast

I really envy those of you that can build/tinker with computers! I know I'm way past due upgrading; and since I know nothing about the guts of a computer, I have to buy new. I frankly don't even know what to look for in a new computer, except SSD is important.

Well you also have:
Processor speed
Processor cores
RAM

These are generally important...

Yeah, I rarely go because the temptation to spend money is so great

My brother currently has an i7-4770k I got him a couple years ago, but it's a poor overclocker (4.2), whereas the i7-4790k I got for myself earlier this year is pretty nice, 4.8ghz @ 1.31v. Of course, he (and I) don't really need all that power, but it's fun.

I'm hoping to get close to 5ghz with that 6700k, on his Corsair H100.

My Z170 M5 mobo "game boost" mode bumps the 6700k to 4.4Ghz with no sweat. Not that I need over clocking.

You didn't specify that it was a photography thread, and this is the "off topic" so it could be anything.

But since it did take a turn; my biggest concern about getting a new computer is how to transfer everything off the old computer onto the new one!

As long as your old HDD is still working just install it in the new or upgraded PC. Then treat it as a second drive, all your stuff will be on it. This is what I did

That certainly seems like a safe & easy way! Would this work with the old HD being Vista; and the new one probably Windows 10? (Told ya I don't know much about the workings of computers! )
