The use of an ssd for the operating system only was a solid idea when they were small and expensive. Now you can get a 1TB ssd for a little over $300. Putting the OS and the few programs you use most on it will speed up processes considerably. If you want crazy fast, buy two and raid them.

With a single drive loaded with the OS and applications the interface will have to queue al I/O requests and execute that mixture of application I/O along with OS I/O on a single interface. Put the OS on one physical drive and the application on a different physical drive and the requests can be executed simultaneously, across multiple ports, especially on multicore processors.

Thanks, that makes sense. I might do that if and when my program launch times start to take more than 1 or 2 seconds
