Meanwhile, back on the subject of books, I've just finished reading Alexandra Harris's biography of Virginia Woolf. Yep, that's me: looks like an ex-squaddie but would rather be reading Virginia Woolf.
Just watch out for a hostile Woolf fan who won't hit you, they'll just harbour a hateful stream-of-conscious from a distance.

Just finished “Codename Villanelle” which the great BBC series “Killing Eve” was based on.Not quite as quirky as the TV show but still a good read and gives a lot of the back story to The Twelve and Villanelle herself.
Edit Read on a Paperwhite Kindle quite a close experience to reading a “real” book.

From 130 years ago: "The Golden Bough" by James Frazer. One of those works that digs at questions behind questions, with regard to mythology and folklore - as well as where some even modern ideas about monarchies may have come from.

It's fairly dense and this is my second time through it, trying to digest a little more this time around.

Also it is old enough to have migrated into the public domain, so there are electronic versions available.

I remember first becoming aware of this book when it was shown on Colonel Kurtz’ bookshelf in one of the later scenes of Apocalypse Now.

Tried reading it but it was too “dense” for my 18 year old self too, should really give it another go.

I'm going to be boring, but I am currently working through "The field guide to Human Error" by Sidney Dekker. It's an interesting little debate on the causes of human error and how to reduce the probability of it happening.

Ring of Steel...Germany and Austria-Hungary at war 1914-1918, by Alexander Watson.

Danubia, A Personal History of the Habsburg Empire, by Simon Winder.

Lately I've become quite interested in the history of Germany and Austria. Fascinating stuff.

The modern anthology 'Staying Alive'.

"Visiting Hour" (1987) by Scottish poet Stewart Conn.

"In the pond of our new garden
were five orange stains, under
inches of ice. Weeks since anyone
had been there. Already by far
the most severe winter for years.
You broke the ice with a hammer.
I watched the goldfish appear,
blunt-nosed and delicately clear.

Since then so much has taken place
to distance us from what we were.
That it should come to this.
Unable to hide the horror
in my eyes, I stand helpless
by your bedside and can do no more
than wish it were simply a matter
of smashing the ice and giving you air."

The Drifters - James Michener

Last week I finished reading it for the 2nd time. I first read this book ~45 years ago, when I was 17-18 years old. Curious to see how my ideals, morals and values have changed in the ensuing years.

Some passages in the book surprised me, passages I had forgotten about, but must have had an impact on me personally.

1. My refusal to take drugs & drink alcohol must have been strengthened by events in this book.
2. The high-end audio gear mentioned in the book must have triggered my audiophile hobby.
3. The vinyl LPs written about in the book sparked the beginnings of my record collection.

This week, I will begin my 2nd read of:

The Source - James Michener
