If you like the book, see the movie "Enemy at the gates". Great flick!

The History of England, from it's earliest beginnings to the Tudors.
Volume 1, Foundation

The History of England, from James 1 to the Glorious Revolution .
Volume 3 Civil War

The Puritan Experiment, New England Society from Bradford to Edwards.

The first two books are by Peter Ackroyd, the last by Frances Bremer.

All excellent histories.

I have seen it, on more than one occasion, and enjoyed it.

The film diverges from the author's narrative by a wide margin in several areas.

Just finished "Gallipoli, the Air War", and before that "The Ottoman Centuries". Now I have to select from the pile of other books I've accumulated recently, including "Dorothea Lange, a Life Beyond Limits" and "The Prize".

Currently "Unintended Consequences" in hard form and Road Less Traveled in e-form. I have 3 or 4 hard bound books on the waiting list and the same number of e-books.

If this is the John Ross novel, I, too, have it hardbound, and met him at the Soldier of Fortune Convention the year of its publication, if memory serves (debatable).
Thoroughly enjoyed it, August '96.
