Just completed: "At The Mountains Of Madness" Volume I & II by Lovecraft / Baranger, original short story 1936, this illustrated version 2020 / 2021, pages unnumbered.

I read little fiction, but have recently been exploring illustrated stories, and this was the latest. My first by Lovecraft, I was quite taken by his style with this, and the Francois Baranger artwork had me hooked. I would not have picked it up, otherwise, and do not anticipate reading more Lovecraft, but, we'll see.

as one might surmise from my posts in this thread

I am a lover of history and good historical fiction

years ago I saw a movie on a early tv cable channel: Zulu

QuoteQuote:
The British are fighting the Zulus and one of their columns has just been wiped out at Isandlwana. The Zulus next fix their sights on the small British outpost at Rorke's Drift. At the outpost are one hundred fifty British troops under the command of Lieutenants Bromhead and Chard. In the next few days, these one hundred fifty troops will fight about four thousand Zulus in one of the most courageous battles in history.
Zulu (1964) - IMDb

I enjoyed it very much

I have now discovered:

The Anglo-Zulu War (5 book series)

by James Mace (Author) , Ian Knight (Foreword)

The Anglo-Zulu War (5 book series) Kindle Edition

and have just finished Brutal Valour: The Tragedy of Isandlwana

I would recommend both the film and the series

The Overstory by Richard Powers,a very interesting novel about nine characters whose lives interconnect through their interaction with trees and attempts to save forests. That sounds a bit tree-huggy but it gives great info about the science behind how trees themselves interreact.

I'm reading a book entitled, 'The Battle of Midway, by Craig Symonds, who is a Professor of American Naval History at the U.S. Naval Academy. It is a well written, lucid history that examines both sides in this, what I would call 'epic' battle...that was fought many decades ago in the Pacific.

It is not a good side-bad side type of popular history, but is a fair look at why, who and when. And where.

I'm reading Richard Brookhiser's biography of US President James Madison. Wonderfully interesting so far.

I'm reading another Craig Symond book.

This book is 'World War Two at Sea: A Global History' .

I so enjoyed ' The Battle of Midway', a book I picked up from the local library, that I bought World War Two at Sea.

I would highly recommend his books, if you are interested in reading detailed, well written books on naval history.

Just completed: "Heirs Of The Founders, The Epic Rivalry of Henry Clay, John Calhoun, and Daniel Webster, The Second Generation Of American Giants" by H.W. Brands, 2018, 413 pages.

Another of Brands' historical works now added to my library, and of a period I would not otherwise have investigated, in all likelihood.

Just completed: "Killing The Killers, The Secret War Against Terrorists" by Bill O'Reilly & Martin Dugard, 2022, 275 pages.

I gravitate toward history, particularly military history, but these stories are so recent, it feels more like "news" instead.

Started to read Agency by William Gibson but struggled to get into until I realised it’s the sequel to The Peripheral, so will order that from my library and try that first.

The Civil War by Shelby Foote. Not as full an account of the war as other histories but it just reads so well.

I’ve enjoyed Gibson’s writing for some years, but I’ve always had to struggle a bit to get into each book. I find it’s worth the struggle, but I have to admit to dipping in and out of Agency for a while, now that I’ve worked out the scenario(s) and the characters. Maybe I should have read The Peripheral first, and I would have, but I missed it.
