Political posts have been deleted. Please get back on track so we don't have to start handing out penalties.

Anybody know the origins of referring to oneself as "my own self?" Whatever happened to just "myself?"

That brings back a memory. When I was a teenager my camera, according to my stepfather, used "fill-um" as in "Did you get that roll of fill-um developed?"

And 'Had I...' would be even shorter, but neither is subjunctive due to the absent form of to be. But both work, grammatically.

In the UK that pronunciation is associated with people from the North East of England,any connections there?

'my personal opinion' vs 'my opinion - are these different types of opinions or is the 'personal'just used for emphasis?

Has anyone heard the color yellow described as 'pure dee ole yeller'? My grandma's statement: "Mah Lordy her draess was pure dee ole yeller ah tell you." Funny thing is I am very partial to yellow.

And in Texas there is "ahhll" which refers either to the liquid black gold that comes from the ground, or a collective for friends, as in "y'ahhll come over."
In and around where I grew up on Long Island, NY I occasionally heard "fil-um" but I thought it either an affectation or verbal joke.

It's different in different places in the South. In some regions "y'all" is both singular and plural. I others it's singular, and the plural is "all y'all".

I have one of those on-line lists of this-and-that called "Medical Dictionary of the South." A thin line between poking fun and ridiculing always attends these.

Cesarean section = a neighborhood in Rome (and therefore SEIZURE = a Roman emperor)

Dilate = to live long

Labor pain = getting hurt at work

Medical staff = a doctor's cane

Pap smear = a false accusation of fatherhood

Varicose = nearby

Hangnail = a coat hook

CAT scan = looking for a kitty

Morbid = offering a higher price

Outpatient = someone who fainted

Artery = the study of paintings

Enema = not a friend

There are some more, but that's enough.

Mentions of penalties and grammar reminds me of a scene from 'The Life of Brian', titled "Brian Learns to Conjugate".

Oh, sureyoubetcha, but I feel that being from the region of the country that I'm from I can poke a little fun as we have no colloquialisms or regional language idiosyncrasies; dontchaknow.

I sometimes distinguish between a 'personal opinion' and a 'professional opinion' like that. They both come out of the same brain, but one gets filtered through the layers of "OK, how to say this so I keep getting a paycheck and maybe get people to actually listen to it"
