We cannot use this unit of measure down under because the fields for our native game (and cricket for that matter) are of an indeterminate size.

In Victoria (in Oz!) we do measure things by comparison to a playing arena, but we are very specific about which arena! It is always the hallowed turf of the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground)!

A good and large unit of measure. Quite a contrast to the relatively small, nearby home ground of Richmond.

We should mention it's a stadium that can hold 100,000 fans!

Also, "reversing" a vehicle here commonly implies you've turned a vehicle around 180 degrees to go in the opposite direction.
We call that "Doing a U-ie/U-eee" i.e., a U-turn.

After all, selecting "L" for low doesn't mean you're lowering the vehicle. .
Zackly! On my Range Rover, I press a button on the dash to lower the vehicle.

That is an education for me, I was unaware that they spoke English in Newfoundland. In the early 70s a couple of Newfoundlanders were working with us on concrete construction, for the entire crew it was mostly point to show them what we wanted done. Much of the crew spoke with accents as they were immigrants from Italy, Greece or Portugual. Even those from Quebec learning English were easier to understand. I am sure that the accents are not so heavy as I have know many working out here in Alberta and although their use of words is different one can tell they are speaking the same language but those two..

I've been to British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatoon, Manitoba and Québec, many times. The only place I had any trouble understanding people was Québec.

Something about my lack of understanding French and their refusal to speak anything but I think.

I've had no problem with them. The trick is to speak Dutch - or any other language you can speak, so long as it's not English. They will then be happy to speak English once it's been understood that you can't speak French and they can't speak the other language - but you can both speak English!

Cricket fields in England also tend to be far smaller than in Oz.

That's because their island is much smaller than yours.

I wonder how an Aussie would go in Quebec!
Apparently in France we get a lot more cooperation from the locals than the English English-speakers do!
It may be that the French expect less of Aussies!
In some parts they actually love us because of WW1 stories passed down through the generations.

Winnebago is an Indian tribe from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois, now confined to a reservation in Eastern Nebraska.

We don't play soccer here - that is reserved for America - we play football, typified by only being allowed to kick the ball with your feet.

Well, there you go. I've misunderstood Leroy Jethro Gibbs for years.

I always thought he said "hoo rah!"

Depends on who was your D.I. in basic.

In Scent Of A Woman, Pacino says 'hooah!'

In 1989 when I was in Saudi Arabia, I worked with some Bell Canada blokes from Montreal. They always spoke excellent English. They told me that when they went to Paris, they never spoke French as the Parisians would snub them. They stuck with English.

The Teleglobe chaps from Montreal that I dealt with on a regular basis from HO in Sydney always spoke excellent English, too.

When my wife was on holiday in Austria, she overheard an Austrian telling, in German, an American woman that he didn't speak English.

When the American lady had left, my wife asked a question, in English, he replied with perfect English. (She didn't let on that she is Swiss and also spoke Swiss-German so she understood what he had been saying. She has been here for 60+ years so she speaks with an Aussie accent.)

A few years ago I worked on a ship that the crew were predominantly Quebecois French and one day one of the crew said something derogatory about a colleague of mine in French which he overheard and responded in Parisian French. Later the crewmember that made the remark was overheard telling another crewmember that my colleague spoke French but he did not understand his French.
