I was on the bus recently, which passed a Police Station with a grassy bank outside. On the bank was a deceased rabbit.

'Hm', i thought, 'Who killed Rozzer Rabbit ?'

Nearly put this one in the Corona Virus thead - but it's just a little too "light-hearted" for that.

FYI: Although almost all Americans know "Bobbie" and a few know "Peeler," you would be hard pressed to locate one of us familiar with "Rozzer" as slang for a policeman.

I guess you never say “It’s crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide.”
Roughly translated “It’s insane to try and bribe a policeman with fake money.”

Truth be told, no, not a chance.

Suspect that depends on the country where you are - in some countries like Cambodia, fake greenbacks are almost as good as the real thing!

THIS is why I don't watch anything on BBC. There are no English subtitles.

Don't know about other places in the UK (especially the big cities), but around here you'd usually say "Cops" or the "Fuzz" - can't remember ever hearing of the "Peelers", and rarely of the "Rozzers"

I must admit I haven't heard the word Rozzer in the 35 years I've been in the USA. I actually was one though from 1966 to 1970.

Rozzer was fairly common up north in the sixties, along with "filth" I guess it's slang evolution from "Robert" as in Robert Peel

"filth" is probably quite common.

The current subtitling software used by the Beeb is, er, not fully reliable. It's worth watching BBC news with the titles on and volume off to see what malapropisms are produced, eg
"the only way to bring someone back to life is to use a decent beer later"

"rhino porn is the world's most expensive commodity"

"the coast that way to Cromer, famous for its crap"

Subtitles for live programmes has always been problematic.

I was showing my wife some pictures I took of the comet Neowise with my K-3 II.

"Those look really nice" she complimented. "I suppose they're okay," I replied, "but I had to shoot at a fairly high ISO, so there's a bit of noise." Then, half-jokingly, I added "I would have done much better with a full-frame camera." Not missing a note, she offered "Well, keep building your camera kitty. You might have enough funds when the comet comes around next time."

- Craig

(PS. Neowise has an orbital period of ~ 6,800 years)

I’d read that as a “yes you can upgrade to FF!”
