The manager of a small shoe shop goes in to open up one morning and notices that overnight something has caused a crack in the front plate glass window. He calls a local glazier, and old Joe comes out to have a look.

Joe looks at the window, has a think for a minute, then goes into his old tool bag and comes out with a small diamond tipped drill bit and a hand drill. He follows the line of the crack, and drills a small hole about 5 millimetres from the end of the crack.

One of the shop assistants, a young blonde girl, has been watching all this and asks Joe why he drilled a hole. Joe explains that the crack will tend to propagate in the same direction as it is currently going, so when the crack gets to the hole it will stop.

The shop assistant suddenly smiles and exclaims "That explains every, I always wondered what my belly button was for....."
