One of the most insidious innovations by management is the evaluation by clients, customers, students. You can get 400 positive responses, but at you annual review it's the one negative that will be discussed. We had teaching evaluation by students, a transparent invitation to lower standards and give high grades. At an annual review I was put on the spot not for anything in the several hundred evaluations submitted, but rather for a casual comment a student made to the academic vice president, obviously a complaint to which I was completely oblivious.
