Update on my Jeep Brakes

To those that posted in this thread....
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/14-general-talk/313180-reckon-what.html

......I thank you and appreciate your responses. Some of you were right on target, and though it could have been a number of things it did end up being a leaking wheel cylinder that was not so evident at first sight.

Anyhow...that is just the beginning of the story, unfortunately.

I took it to my regular repair shop, a certified shop and the best in town. I've had a ton of service performed there over the years, always first class. I know the owner and the mechanic I use most often is very talented and dedicated to excellent service.
They are well known for meticulous service at fair and reasonable prices.

They made the repair and installed new rear brakes;;;the front were fine. Yesterday afternoon they had it ready and I picked it up just at the start of rush hour traffic, which is very here on a Friday afternoon. As I drove away I heard a little noise that was not familiar, but assumed it was not abnormal, just the new brakes "settling in" or something? As I got down the highway a few miles it became louder and more frequent .....then some vibration. I got out wondering if I had a tire going flat, but after a quick glance I could see they were all ok.

Turned around and headed back to the repair shop...got within two blocks of it when there was a sudden "thud" the rear end dropped, and my left rear wheel passed me in the oncoming traffic lane. I drove it over onto the shoulder, dragging the rear hub in the pavement and got out and retrieved the wheel. Amazingly, ther was a brief lull in traffic in both directions just as this all transpired or it could have been a real catastrophe. They drive wicked and fast on that road on a Friday afternoon.

No one killed, no one injured. Now it's up to the shop to make it all right, and I suspect they will without me having to get nasty. They are good people.....I kept my cool....didn't go ballistic, I was just thankful no one was hurt....and you can bet they were too.

You're just going along on a beautiful sunny and warm day in the middle of February, life is good, all is well.....and then it isn't.
Stuff happens....no one is immune.

I had some bad luck....but the good luck outweighed it by miles...and maybe someone's life.
Best Regards!

Wow - I'd say you were extremely fortunate that traffic was fairly light when all this happened. Well, if this shop is as good as you say, they should more than compensate you! Sometimes the simplest things (like tightening the lug nuts on a wheel) get overlooked. Glad that no one was hurt!

Thanks for letting us know, and thank God there were no injuries or worse! Now hopefully you can be confident again with your vehicle and enjoy those places that a jeep is best at getting to.... squirrel havens!!

Yep, it could have been a real catastrophe. I'm still thinking of how fortunate I was....everyone was! Things like this happen all too often in a busy and hurried world where too many are suffering overload. Sometimes it is doctors operating on the wrong patient, or the girl/guy at McDonalds getting your order all wrong.
I guess we need to be more observant in every situation where we have some stake in the outcome. It could save our life or just make certain we get cheese on our burger!

Regards!

That's a close one!

Must have been Otis' mind control to stop people going along there at that time

Or perhaps the wheel incident was caused by Otis as a "reminder"..... you haven't been buying cheaper quality nuts and such for the feeders lately, have you rupert?

No, if I had been run over and smashed like a bug....then you might assume Otis played a role in it.

I wouldn't still be around if I cheated Otis on his exotic nuts and fancy fruit. I take some chances, but never with Otis gourmet feed......I did that once and paid the price. Never again!

It was a reminder that even when things are going great, life is good, blue skies and sunshine as it was yesterday......someone or something can rain on your party. It's a part of life that has no immunity...rich or poor....any race or creed...any size or shape....there is no discrimination with life's stormy weather.

Regards!

Thanks, I was fine. No, I almost always carry my X10/X20, but only intended this to be a quick pick up......it's always that way when you don't have a camera with you.

Regards!

Whew! I'm glad "The Force" was with you on this one, my friend.

Years ago, when we were taking my daughter, Robin, to live in Columbus as she started grad school at Ohio State, we were driving north on I55 in Mississippi. I was riding with Robin in her little Ford Escort, with Connie following in a rented van. We ran over something; for a moment or two, things seemed to be all right, but my wife called with her cell phone to tell us she had seen a "cloud" of vapor emerging from the car. We exited and just made it to a station before the Escort quit running; we had ruptured the fuel tank. At first, I was furious at our bad luck . . . . . . . . . then it dawned on me that I ought to be thankful for coming through without a scratch.

A local Ford dealer had a tank flown in, and we were on our way 48 hours later. In the meantime we had a wonderful day in Vicksburg making the "layover" a pleasant one, indeed.

That's kinda how I was Jer......too thankful to get mad. If you knew the highway I was on at rush hour on a Friday afternoon, you would know it was a miracle my misfortune happened in the only lull in traffic that that stretch of road has ever seen. It could have been a catastrophe.

Likewise, you could have gone out in a ball of flame with your daughter......and your wife watching. I don't know how you say your thanks, but I have said mine plenty of times since Friday...and I bet you did the same.

Best Regards!

Same thing happened to my buddy's Hyundai this past summer. Same deal, shop forgot to tighten wheel lugs. Like you he was lucky. Glad you're ok.

It appears this is more common than it should be. Maybe a printed checklist checked by two people would be a good idea on work such as this where the consequences could be catastrophic? It could easily bankrupt a business if it resulted in death or massive casualties.

When I was still plumbing I put in hundreds of water heaters...gas and electric. I could install them in my sleep but still carried a checklist to make certain I left nothing to chance. Once or twice it paid off to have it. Some things are critical and if not done properly or completed, it can be a real danger. I never had any catastrophes or lawsuits. Those checklists were worth the few minutes it took to go over each step.

Another common disaster is leaving the drain plug out on oil changes or more common, failing to fill the engine with oil after draining. Happened to my sister's new Maxima and it exploded on the freeway. The dealer tried to deny liability but her attorney took care of that easily and she got a new Maxima and $25K for her inconvenience and the dealers delay in resolving the matter.

An ounce of prevention........

Glad it ended without injuries...

Years ago I took my truck to a Goodyear place to have them fix a flat and put it back on the truck. Walked to work about 3 blocks, picked it up later. Next day I put the regular tire back on...yes the spare had a flat while I had the regular one off to fix it...and found two lug bolts stripped. Some idiot used an air wrench to start the things, never knew they were cross threaded, took me forever to get the nuts off.

So I took it back to the shop and talked to the manager, who denied they did it, oh no we never do that. (I had just left a job working in a shop where in addition to fixing chain saws I changed tires daily, I knew exactly what they did). I finally got pretty angry, they refused to replace my lug bolts, which only cost about 2 bucks each plus labor, which I had to do, but I did tell him I would never, ever go in another Goodyear. I still avoid them 30 years later...

Fortunately the original tire usually on the road was still under road hazard warranty, only about 6 months old, and was replaced entirely, somebody lost a large Old Hickory kitchen knife and my left rear tire found it...no fixing that...
