Why raccoon, why? <insert grumbling here...>

I admit it.. I own a death car. I frequently have small animals run under the wheels. This time it was a giant raccoon the size of a medium dog. Guess who gets to fill out an insurance claim? <insert ranting, cursing, and grumbling here...> Sorry, just needed to vent. /rant

Read up on wombats on wiki. Size is about right compared to the raccoon I hit (it was a pretty big one). I'd say the damage would be equivalent between the two.

Wombat: All three known extant species average around a metre in length and weigh between 20 and 35 kg (44 and 77 lb).

Wombats are known to really destroy cars.

Victorian Police are describing a freakish accident in far-east Gippsland this morning as something out of a Hollywood movie.

Two workmen were driving their twin-cab utility to the Mallacoota Airport when the car hit a wombat crossing the road.

Senior Constable Mark Tregellas says the car then crashed through a guard rail and became airborne off the side of the bridge.

"And landed on a tree that was about 20 feet above the creek across from the bridge," he said.

"They teetered there and basically fell off the tree into the creek.

"The car was completely totalled and surprisingly both men on board were without injuries whatsoever."

Wombats rule. They are SOLID. And hugely strong. You do not mess with wombats. They don't only take out cars. They take out utes too.

My raccoons come every night...they have for years. The Papa must weigh 35-40 pounds and the Mama 25-30...but they are well fed every night.

Waiting for dinner to be served...

I tell them to stay out of the road, but you know how they are......

Sorry about your car....I'm pretty certain it wasn't the raccoons intent!

Hope he didn't leave any little orphans?

The little ones are so cute and funny too! I have been feeding them for years so I have several generations that visit me.

They look like little bears to me!

Really unfortunate for you and the raccoon.

I hit a small doe just North of Buffalo, Wyoming a few years back. I was driving an 18 wheeler. It did more than $5,000 damage to the truck. Had to be towed, the highway patrol had to do an investigation, and I spent several days in a motel room.

Good times.

I hit a big buck downtown a couple of years ago. Actually, he did most of the hitting. He was running down along the RR track as I was slowing down to around 15 mph...and hit the drivers front fender/bumper. He got up and ran away after $2k to my Jeep. The cops said they had been seeing him around town for a week but couldn't manage to herd him out of town.

A few years back a friend that lives 6-7 miles out of town was hit by a buck that came through his drivers side window on his pickup. One of the antlers went through his shoulder and out his back....he managed to drive to the hospital with the buck still hanging through his window. Messed him up pretty bad, but he did recover. The buck.....broken neck, he was DOA. Gotta be careful they come out of nowhere.
