I forgot to mention that down under, root is essentially the equivalent of the F word.
Well, yes, but it only describes the act, whereas the magic word is much more versatile.

typiste
I haven't used that one for a while.
But I did squeeze "artiste" into a conversation with my wife the other day.

How far are you going back? my Mum was one in the 40s and it's news to me.
I went to school in the 50's and early 60's and it was typiste then ( see my reply to Ron above re: artiste).

Plural possessive nouns have an apostrophe, too.
Covered in my note, as I didn't distinguish between singular and plural. Whoops, OK, you got me

coloured TV
I had a coloured TV!!
(It had a brown timber cabinet when I bought it and my new wife and I painted it 'antique green' . The televised image was just monochrome. (And it was before there was much colourful language on TV also.)

I confess to the occasional outbreak over misuse of apostrophes:
cucumber's' beats all

Rob, I am sure that you would love the book "Eats, shoots and leaves" by Lynne Truss
She covers misuse of all sorts of punctuation.

(Ron, p38arover, beat me to it).

That one's been on our bookshelves for quite some time, thanks, Rod. It's one of the simplest and most entertaining explanations of punctuation I've seen – highly recommended. For a wider approach to learning English there's the venerable Eric Partridge work "Usage and Abusage: A Guide to Good English".

Why can they not just say: "Please stand for the national anthems."? It does my head in!
Oh boy, this has all the signs of becoming another "rate of speed".

No doubt it's to prevent people from standing down.
