@reeftool Accord (ex-Outback) and mrs. monochrome's MINI Cooper Hardtop.

I'm the lone Windows holdout anyway.

I will probably continue to keep a Windows computer around, even if I do buy a Mac. My wife is pretty fond of Windows (why?). I've grown pretty fond of my iPad in the past few years so why not try a Mac?

The big day has passed so I will assume it's now safe to turn Windows update back on without them loading all that Windows 10 rubbish. I've been manually installing the updates I want.

Today is the last day for the free upgrade. Im posting this from a 6 year old Sony Vaio with Win 7. Im tempted to upgrade but it's going to brick some of the software.

Side note does anyone work for a sizable company that is on Windows 10 already? My company is very behind with Windows releases. Windows 10 would even be considered for rolling out to users for another few years.

I work for a very large company, multinational, about 130,000 employees.

They run Windows 7 Enterprise.

Recently the Office software was updated to (I think) version 13. Many issues.

No hint of change to Windows 10 yet.

Of course they are also still running applications that were originally DOS based, although the Propeller Heads are frantically working to come up with versions that will function in today's computing environment.

Maybe by the time support for 7 ends Microsoft will have a better option than 10.

Nah, Windows 7 ends 2020 so must likely Corps are will go to Windows 10 Enterprise and that will buy them time until 2025. Last I read Windows 10 was the last numbered version and they are going to start releasing more frequent releases like Apple. If large corporate computer environments are anything past 2025 like now its going to be a nightmare with more frequent major updates.

We seem to have a Win7Enterprise corporate update monthly now, plus the weekly rollout of new internal app fixes. 57,000 licenses at my unit. 320,000 worldwide.

Microsoft has forced me to buy a new computer.

iMac 21" loaded.

The 21" iMac isn't a great buy to be honest. If you were to drop say $2100 on a loaded iMac you're getting screwed on a couple fronts.

-The memory since they are charging $200 to upgrade you up to 16GB. The 27" one is user accessible and easy as heck to install your own memory. Just go on Amazon and grab a $60 16GB ram kit and then your iMac is going to have 24GB(which is overkill usually but theres no wall really).
-The video card in the 21" iMac is rubbish. It's an integrated video card which is what you find in a Mac laptop. The 27" has a dedicated video card and much more powerful.
-27" has a faster CPU
-27" screen is probably worth at least $1500 alone.

21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display
3.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
16GB
256GB Flash Storage
Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200
$2,099.00

27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display
4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz
24GB (add in 16 GB after market + the 8GB it comes with)
256GB Flash Storage
AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2GB video memory
$2,399.00 + $60 aftermarket 16GB ram = $2460

$360 dollar difference for a computer thats much better(bigger screen, more memory, faster cpu, much faster video card).

You missed one thing. I don't want to futz with stuff like installing my own RAM any more. I can futz with what I already have for $250.

Add in either 2Tb Fusion drive on the 27" plus an exterior 2Tb external backup drive or dual 2Tb desktop externals with the flash drive option and you're pushing $3,000 really hard with sales tax (10%). I don't know that I need all that grunt to run a few applications and Lightroom. (i7 + 256 flash w/ dual 2Tb externals is $3,200).

For $2,000 and some futzing around I could build a custom Windows system. Been there and done that for thirty years. It isn't fun any more.

Pick a color. Write a check. Drive it off the lot.
Start. Drive. Park.
Pay dealer to change the oil twice a year.
Repeat in 8 years.

I don't know how it would be possible to futz around with an iMac RAM install. You lay the imac down, push in the memory compartment button, take the panel off, stick memory in, put panel back in. Not much more complicated than hooking up external backup drives.

All machines at home, and at work now running Windows 10.
Problems encountered and solved: Had to re-install fingerprint driver on one machine and built-in camera driver on another. Not bad. Much nicer interface than Windows 7 or 8.1. Fast too.

Three machines with Win 10. One desktop workstation came native a couple of months ago - one work station was updated from Win 8 last year with the scheduled download etc when 10 was first distributed. Then I allowed my HP tablet to go the same route a week ago when I read above that a tablet user was happy with Win 10. The tablet mode for the tablet replicates the good features of Win8 that I previously quite liked on the tablet.

The preferences on my tablet and workstation are now synched and this caused a minor bug when almost immediately the Start menu failed to open on the workstation. Reading up on it on the web it is a common win 10 fault and Microsoft have a web page and wizard to fix the issue. So all fixed now.

Work has Win 8 Enterprise on most machines and has plans on upgrading to Win 10. The organisation is a state education system with an unknown number of machines but it would rank in the tens of thousands. Where failure to upgrade catches the system out is when users attempt to use externally developed educational software programmes that fail to run on the departmentally owned machines due to processor speed or lack of appropriate OS resources.

I did, it's okay. I feel indifferent about Windows 8.1 and 10. Gaming performance on both are similar.
