it started out as attempt to make a Japanese matchlock
in the early 60's a little towheaded kid wouldn't even know where to get gunpowder
but firecrackers were a known quantity
I had whittled the stock from a 2x4
made the serpentine from scrap iron
artfully lashed the thing together with tarred jute
it was pretty impressive and it needed to be shot
the problem with reading books is acting on the outlandish ideas they stimulate
I've always over-engineered things or been lucky
I survived this unscathed and didn't do much more than create marble dust
however a few years later I met a nine-fingered boy with a caved in chest
a silver salute had landed in his pocket during a wrist rocket experiment
that changed my attitude towards large fireworks and explosions in general
