Yes, I strongly suspect winter plays a role. Not so sure about the part with people being run over
I see there are some still playing around here, mainly children. I never played Pokemon Go myself, but I do play the "predecessor" from Niantic, Ingress. Although I play it because I already do walk/hike, and not the other way around, it does inspire to make detours to capture just one more portal and link up one more field... Heck of a lot better than playing with the phone on the couch
