Had a fun day out today, visiting Lindisfarne with me using my K1 set-up and my son using the K10D system he's now laid claim to. He's getting a lot of enjoyment out of it, which is nice to see:

Speaking of long ships, I am coincidentally ATM watching ‘The Vikings’ (1958) with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine and Janet Leigh. .

Currently de-acquiring the Think Tank Retrospective 30 version 2. Got it for a test, liked it well enough, but prefer to use another messenger bag rather than this one. Somebody should be happy with it!

Recently I've been doing an honest assessment of what gear I have and what gear I actually need. As much as I loved my two K5's I couldn't think of a valid reason to keep 4 camera's so they've been sold, along with my Plastic Fantastic 35, a set of extension tubes, as well as a couple of film cameras. Everything except the film gear went to forum members so that makes me happy.

I'm going through the same process now with camera bags and there'll be a Domke F2 in the classifieds at some stage.

I think he is just thinning the herd and keeping mostly HD lenses while letting the SMC lenses move to new homes...like the SMC DA21 he sent me! I love it but it has been so horrible weather-wise I have not taken it out enough over the last week.

I think the KR I purchased for a buddy will depart in the coming week with several lenses. (Fingers crossed.)

In general it is time to reduce the insane amount of gear I have to user items only plus the K lenses and Accessories Collection. I had allocated an amount of money to Buying / Trying / Selling / Buying / Trying Selling all the old gear I had dreamt about perusing sales material in the 70’s - 90’s. I’ve grossly exceeded the money limit so it is time to sell the things I’m not using. The end game is a much smaller ‘bag’ of gear. KP and pancakes, plus the DA* zooms and a small number of FF lenses. I think I have over 30 film cameras. I can’t use them all even once a year. I’ll keep a few.

I decided to make the KP my casual camera for grandkids, walking around and travel because it is such a good picture maker with the Accelerator Chip. I didn’t upgrade my K-1 because I don’t think I need two A.C.’s. I will use K-1 primarily with K lenses specifically to shoot them on FF digital, which was the original plan. I might upgrade to K-1ll nearer its end-of-life pricing if that happens. I might even sell the DA Limiteds and just use FA Limiteds on both cameras, but HD and 9 blades is a ‘keeping’ feature.

The DFA lenses, particularly the 15-30 and *70-200 are simply too bulky, heavy and cumbersome to use on a casual basis. I need a monopod just to properly handle them, so I bought used DA* lenses to replace them equivalence-wise. That sets up the issue of the DFA lenses being so much better than the DA* lenses that I can’t have APSc and the best zooms (for convenience and usability) - particularly the DA*16-50 vs. DFA 24-70. For now I’ll keep the DFA*70-200 but eventually it will also be sold (the 50-135 is special I it’s own right) and keep the DFA24-70 permanently. $350 each for the DA*’s makes keeping them an easy choice.

Short answer, financial responsibility and satisfaction of my original goal. Long answer, usability and not enough time and skill to warrant tieing up money in professional quality lenses when there is a PDG alternative.

While I had nowhere near the amount of gear that some people here have, I decided after thinking long and hard about it that there was no way that I was going to use it all, no matter how many scenario's I came up with to justify keeping all of it. So I sold / gave away everything apart from my new KP, my K30 and 7 prime lenses and a couple of zooms. There's no way I'm likely to ever shoot another roll of film either so my last pieces of film gear also went to new homes.

I must say that it's been a liberating experience - I've now got two manageable kits that should suit any situation (KP plus 15, 21, 40, DA 50, 70 & 100mm primes, K30 with a Sigma 10-20 zoom and the 31 Limited), and I've got a few extra dollars in my pocket as well. The only thing I might be tempted by is the 20-40 zoom but I'm going to apply my "72 hour potential purchase" rule to that to see if I really do want it.

I am aiming for a set of primes like Carl's (I have those four Limited lenses, plus a Tamron SP 90mm 52BB and a Sigma 50mm macro) and a set of four zooms, plus a few special primes like the M28mm/3.5, K55mm, Vivitar 135mm and the M200mm. I have a big stretch of leave later this year to make my choices, see how I go. First shootout is the short-tele-zooms (35-80mm and similar) in April, then the 90-100-135mm teles in May. After that the 40-50mm lineup gets culled (predictably painful, I think I have seven in the list). I like the old wide-tele zooms from film cameras, they are much shorter physically than the new HD DA zooms that cross State borders when fully extended.
