The square format seems to have died off as it is not quite right for vertical studs or horizontal joists. They were handy to have when you wanted to hold it all together with a carriage bolt, though. Seems to be an antiques roadshow item now, unfortunately.
Pity. I have several square drill bits that create the square hole by drilling round and chiselling the corners, but the rotary style square bit created a much tidier square hole.

Why as a matter of fact I do.

The Bux magnetic base drill is an awesome portable drill press that has an electro magnetic base. Useful when performing heavy drilling on ferrous metals such as heavy truck frames.

Simply position, flip the mag switch to lock it down, and drill.

I have filed and broached square holes (quite amateurishly I must admit) and I knew square holes could be milled

or were you talking about mortising bits for woodworking?

Does anyone know if one can still buy the rotary style drills that drill a square hole? (The bit was shaped like a Mazda rotary engine rotor and moved around in such a way as to give a square hole with a slightly rounded corner.)
I have several 1" to 2 1/2" size bits that will drill a triangular hole with rounded corners if fed too fast...

This thread is too much...

There are people in the adult entertainment industry that could make the same claim.
The awful truth is that racer does drill holes for a living. He assembles Boeing passenger jets. I believe he also fixes screws and rivets.

Just a rumor of course, but that would belong in the rumors section and would consume thousands of posts and more electrons than the topic is worth.

Does anyone know about making holes with pitch-invariable bits? Any information would be very helpful. Rumor is that they are very low noise and my hearing can't take much more of the screaming metal. It would be another thing entirely if I could afford LC (lube channel) bits, but those are completely out of my league.

BTW, in case anyone noticed, I am moving away from the retro stuff and embracing all available current tech.

In that regard, I also heard of some innovative bit stabilization (BS) solutions out there involving laser-modulated magnetic fields and Hall-effect. Were my sources bogus or is that the wave of the future?

The video you posted shows the rotary concept very well. There used to be a company in the USA that made a bit like that some 20 years ago. I don't know if they still exist. But yes, the bits I have are of the mortise type.
Not my photo, but like these:

I drove lots of screws in the wing shop. Hundreds on the days the installation jobs were up. Hundreds of rivets too.

In the spar shop I only drive a few rivets on install day, and no screws. All bolts. Permanent bolts.

Bolts with no wrench flats.

With nuts that have breakoff wrench flats.

In perfectly drilled holes.

It's all about the quality of the hole.

"No country for old men" pneumatic Captive Bolt Pistol that must be the ultimate hole making device.
With the right design can make round, square, triangle etc holes, whatever you can imagine, or am I simplifying the matter?

I have an interchangeable drill. What is the best bit? I like my standard/phillips tip alot but my 1/8th inch drill bit is nice. The 1/16th ones are so eloquent but they break so easy.
Anyway It is an interchangeable drill but i want only one bit to use on it so which should i use. Mind you i have over 100 bits for it.
Come on now, this is in the wrong forum entirely... There is already a long running thread about this very topic with some of the same points being discussed in detail:

Drill Bit Recommendations? - Tool Talk - ToolGuyd Community Forum

Please.. Can we just keep this thread in one place? Can we get a modertator's help on this? Where's the complain button?

It's too late to complain. You are already party to the bad behavior. FWIW, I was pretty taken with the idea of a bolt pistol (above). I wonder how many bpm and what kind of accuracy (spray and pray?) it delivers.
