that is where it happened

my shop has push sticks, push pads and hold downs everywhere
so much nicer to sacrifice some wood or plastic than skin or bone

not my job...that's enough...any more just cuts into break time
my dad had an old table saw standing about 5 feet off of the ground.

I remember helping him split a sheet of plywood length wise when I was in middle school

he was pushing the sheet through the blade and I was supporting it as it extended off the table top

and having something pass by my ear

he calmly said, " I guess you should drive me to the doctor "

which I did ( 20 miles ) while he held a towel over his bloody thumb.

[ he had sliced a part of the fleshy portion of his thumb off with the blade ]

as bad as the cuts are one of the more common saw injuries occurs while ripping without a guard assembly
a strip of wood trapped between the blade and fence can be ejected with considerable force
the swing arms on this riving knife prevent that from happening (usually)

there is a saw out there that brakes on contact with flesh
they demonstrate its efficacy with hotdogs

As a former cabinet maker and HS shop instructor, you don't want to get me started on table saw stories.

Oh, yes...one of the reasons why I wince whenever I think of ripping.

I survived wood shop with only one incident. I was turning a chunk of redwood on the lathe and the wood proved too soft and unbalanced for the setup. I don't know which end suddenly ate through, but the next thing I knew, I was staggering to the side with a bloody divot to my forehead along with a mild concussion. A surgeon applied about 18 stitches (most were internal) in an effort to avoid a sunken scar, but with limited success. I have a nice dent to this day.

I used almost those exact same words. Except it was a piece of oak and left index and middle fingers.

Why what? Why a device to keep people from slicing their finger off or why did they sacrifice a perfectly good steak to show what a table saw can do to flesh and bone?

Or "why" something else? Why did the inventor trust his finger saving device enough for a demo? Why do hot dogs exist?
