To resurrect the thread, and put a different slant on it, the best drill bit is when you all get the timing right and all you hear is one loud crash as you hit the rifle butts, followed by a loud thud as the heel of the foot hits the ground......

By the left.......

Of course when I say "by the left" that of course is the wording in the manual. The spoken word comes out more like "byyyya lep" followed by "ep, ayte, ep, eye, ep...."

I did have a DI with a sense of humour, he said that when he started the timing was "sinister, dexter, sinister, dexter......" as he'd been in that long Centurion was a rank, not a tank

By the left actually means the left marker is who the step is taken from, same for by the right (right marker), and by the center (center marker).
All of them you step off with the left foot.

I once got a tiny cut in the head in the army, and within seconds, I leaked a rather large puddle. Looked like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
