Google offline maps on Android devices - anyone using them ? Storage required?

Good evening folks!

I was thinking of using Google Maps (offline)while travelling but I was also wondering how much space/storage those would require.
Apparently, you can download the maps and store them on an external SD card, such as the one I have on my smart phone.

Has anyone been using those off-line maps?
If so, how much storage space did they require?

Thanks!!

There is a maximum area you can save at a time. But the file size depends on how information-dense (did I invent a new word?) The chosen area is. I've gotten areas as big as 2Gb

I suggest trying Maps With Me. It's in the play store and it lets you download entire regions, states, or countries all at once and store them on your SD card.
Each map tells you how much storage it requires before downloading.

I finally gave up...2gb was about right for a couple of trips
apparently the data "expires" after a time

I use a gps dongle with a windows tablet and offline maps (from Microsoft/HERE, I believe)...north America was over 6gb

I can also recommend Maps with Me (Maps.me).

Very good off-line maps. You can also copy downloaded map files between your Android devices (I have it installed on a tablet and a phone), which saves data.

All of Australia (cities included) takes about 270MB, all of UK about 730MB, all Canada 1.9GB, all USA about 4GB.

Good for using in countries like China too, where GPS using Google is unreliable

I noticed that it depends where and how often you use Google Maps in the area you are located..Im in 35×100, so the downloaded map is around 100MB, give or take

Thank you everyone for the information.

I'll give it a go and see what happens.
I can always delete the maps if need be, right?

I've had the Rand McNally Road Atlas on my iPad for years. It consumes 638 MB of storage space. These maps are nowhere near as detailed as Google Maps. While the maps on our phones are handy, they do consume data and also require a connection, something you aren't likely to have much of the time in my area. I guess you could try downloading and see how much space it consumes. For me, I use a Garmin in my car. It was $79 on sale and gets updated maps fairly often. The main reason I use a Garmin is that I travel by motorcycle a lot. I have a bracket on my handlebars to which originally held my phone which I used Google Maps and Navigation. After laying the bike down at 45 mph and taking out everything on the handlebars, I bought the Garmin. My phone wasn't on the bracket at the time but it would have been a very expensive loss if it had been. I consider the Garmin expendable.
