I've got a new Puppy!

About four months ago, I lost my dog. I got him when he was only 5 ½ weeks old and we were best buds for 16 years. He was half Scottie and half Jack Russell and was exceptionally smart. It was a real personal tragedy, because I live alone and he was my companion. But, after going through the grieving process that always comes with such an occurrence, I began kicking around the idea of getting another dog.

The dog I lost was named Buckwheat, so in keeping with “The Little Rascals” theme, I’ve decided that my new puppy will be known as “Spanky.”

He’s an 8-week old male half miniature Poodle, half miniature Australian Shepherd. He’s not going to be very big when he’s full-grown…. probably about 15-20 lbs., actually a little smaller than I’d like, but he’ll do just fine…. the perfect size for a lap dog.

I’m the neighborhood “Grandpa,” and I have a lot of little friends who used to come knocking on my door quite frequently, asking, “Can Buckwheat come out and play?” So, I introduced Spanky to the gang and wouldn’t you know it, yesterday I had a knock on the door and little Lila and her friend Kiki asked, “Can Spanky come out and play?” They took him for about two hours and when they brought him home, he was totally tuckered out!

We’re working on potty training and he’s coming along marvelously! I’ve raised 7 puppies in my life, so I’d like to think I know a thing or two about such matters. So far, he’s only peed on the carpet one time! He whines when he needs to go outside and when he does his “business,” I give him a lot of praise…. saying,“Good Boy!” and I give him a good scratch behind the ears. Positive reinforcement works wonders.

My wife does the same with me !!! " Spanky " looks like a wonderful little pup. Great times ahead, and we would enjoy watching him grow up through your photographs.
