What happened on December 17th 2012?

It shows that at 3:55PM the most users ever were on this site at the same time. What happened to cause this? It was before I was a member so I've been curious...

Isn’t that about the time Pentax decided to start enforcing MAP pricing?

It was a week before Christmas. I think it was just people looking for deals on the K-5 II, K-30, K-01, or Q which had all come out that year...There were pretty big discounts on Black Friday that year...

MAP (UPP) started in April 2012. There was a petition thread to end UPP at the time that was quite popular...

*PETITION* Lets put an end to the crazy online Pentax lens prices in the US! - PentaxForums.com

Adam started it on 12-3. The last post was 37 pages later on 1-6-13.

It wasn't until 12-20 that the rumor sites "confirmed" that Pentax was developing a full frame...I wonder how many people were basing purchasing decisions around a camera that wasn't announced until February 2016?

I think someone on reddit hotlinked one of our attachments that day, so that generated a very large number of sessions. The highest number of actual visitors occurred earlier that year, when the K-01 was originally announced. Everyone thought it would be a FF.

That was May 1, 2013.

Adam’s post about the Reddit hotline answers the question, but IIRC December 2012 featured a flurry of statements by the President of what became Ricoh Imaging that he wanted to compete with and overtake Canon and Nikon. Sadly, it was later shown by Ricoh’s investment bankers the investment in production facilities necessary to turn out that many cameras and lenses would have been $1,200,000.000 - far more capital than Ricoh’s Shareholders were prepared to commit.

Subsequently Ricoh was shown to be prescient, waiting for the digicam market to normalize before executing their Plan, which they are doing now.

It does appear Ricoh is beginning to show a forward business plan. If they roll out what it appears they will in 2019, I think we'll see an upward movement. I just wonder if they still want to overtake the other manufacturers, or if they plan on being a strong niche company.

The implication of my post is rather strongly that they simply cannot and will not attempt to compete with Canon, Nikon )and to a lesser degree Sony). It would simply require too much capital investment at too low a profit margin. That’s the simple fact everyone misses when they think about Pentax. They’re not even trying to compete. They’re doing something entirely different, but almost no one outside our little group can imagine or understand their vision.

They state it pretty clearly on the Special Sites - but even if people read it they’re so locked in to the traditional approach to business they can’t Grok what’s happening right in front of their eyes.
