What would you choose.... for your minimalist photo equipment list ?

K-01 and M28 3.5. This has been my configuration for months now, and makes me a happy camper.

With what I have, if I had to go minimal (understood here as one camera plus a maximum of three lenses (which I think is pushing it for "minimal)) I'd choose:

Digital:

K3 plus 21mm, 35mm and 70mm DA limited lenses

Small format film:

MX plus M 35mm f/2, M 50mm f/1.4 and M 85mm f/2 lenses

Medium format film:

Pentax 645 plus 75mm f/2.8 lens

* D FA*50/1.4 is sitting on the other shoulder, but is that minimalist?

The K-1 and 50 F 1.4 'normal' lens is very minimalist, in an Eisenstadt or Henri Cartier-Bresson way.

But I wouldn't look askance at also taking the 28-105...very useful, capable and of minimalist size, weight and dimension.

I'll often just go with the K-3ii, the DA15mm, and the DA40mm. Very small, very good quality. The only thing it doesn't have is weather resistance. About half my photos on my recent Iceland trip were those two lenses, but it rains so much there most of the other half were using rented 16-85.

I have two bags packed and ready to go:

(1) Pentax K-30, Sigma 10-20, Pentax-DA 18-135, Pentax-DA 55-300

(2) Pentax Q-7, 01, 02, 06 lenses

Whichever kit I carry, I can still carry it comfortably {I'm 70 years old}. My goal is to be able to frame and take whatever scene I encounter.

My mini-list;
My K-5 II for a body.
My DA 15 for an ultra-wide.
An F 28 f2.8 for a normal, do-all small prime (don't own one, yet)
My DA 50 1.8 for a short-tele/portraits prime.
My DA 18-135 for do-all zoom.
A mini-tripod, a normal tripod, and a remote shutter release.

I could drop my current foray into film, and sell a bunch of duplicate focal lengths, and be doing just fine.

I think you're right to be concerned about KP and the pancakes being a bit disappointed. You may have to gather them around you and tell them the the reason you're taking K1, the 50 and the 28-105. After all K1, 50 and 28-105 are full frame and this is a trip for full frame, not for cropped. They'll probably still be somewhat disappointed, but in time, they'll understand.

I never thought I could, but since weeks I walk around with just one lens: the DA35 Macro.
Attached to my K3II it's the equivalent to the 35mm SLR + 50ish standard lens. With the "Macro" as the cherry on top

On a trip abroad the rest of the Limiteds would be in the bag as well.

If I ever cave in and go for FF, the 50 Macro would be the first and only lens I'd probably buy. Or I might just enjoy the old film lenses I still own (Sigma AF24mm, A50/1.4 and the A*85).

The 40 can come...it can pass as a full frame...the 70...well with the 70, I think it would be pushing it.

I thought ( i know dangerous ) that the 70 was ok and most over about 50mm were anyway because of how to get the aperture ratios to work.

You could be right.

I have a 70 Limited and I haven't used it for awhile on my K-1 (usually use it on my K5, K10D), I think there was a bit of vignetting with the K1, but I can't recall for sure as its been awhile. I intend to try it out again. A bit of vignetting doesn't worry me, as when I take pictures with any lens, I usually allow for a margin around the subject...for later cropping, either by me...or the 'cropping' that happens from the machine, when I want to make a print.
