Flickr fees

I'm a pretty big advocate of Flickr as a generally useful photo sharing service but... I just renewed my pro membership for a year - $50 USD, wow! I thought it used to be $25 USD for a year, yikes.

Looks like it was bumped up to $49.99? (Or is this some weird account glitch I've found?)

Haven't seen any notifications about this, but new owners (SMUGMUG), therefore a chance of new rules/fees! ;'(

Ouch that is high especially for a site that is a phone aspect ratio photo sight. Flickr is pissing me off. Maybe its some weird setting on my end but if I post a landscape orientation image one pixel larger than 1024 up to one pixel less than 1600, they will only show a 1024 image compressed to hell and back. The original is available but you have to go hunt it down.

The 6x7 and 6x6 format images I want to have people see is uncompressed 1280 px in the longest dimension because the vertical starts to get pretty big with those formats at 1600px for computer monitors with a 16:9 aspect. But no, the rocket scientists at this so-called photo site knows what's really best for me. Losers.

As a software engineer who's job is to build web platforms I've long thought I should try to make a better photo site than flickr. Not that it would be easy, but some of the basics flickr has never done great. Like a good photo viewer. At least they store uncompressed images.

I guess since I'm a grandfathered member that explains why mine didn't change. I've been a pro member since 2009.

Flickr was supposed to send you a notification of the price increase before your yearly subscription expired.
I still have until April of next year to see what Flickr will be doing with their site before I renew or cancel my subscription.

It appears that Flickr started charging US$49.99 for 'Pro' accounts back in July 2015, but those of us who had automatically renewed grandfathered accounts got a lower rate.

I last paid US$44.95 for a 2 years subscription in Feb 2017. Guess that'll be jumping to US$99.98 in Feb 2019. A hefty increase to be sure, but still only a buck a week.

I don't think I'll be cancelling.

Fred.

Used to be my story with Smugmug for at least 3-4 years, when I got a free upgrade. Then... one day, they told me they will charge me in the upcoming days for the current year only, unless I cancel or change plans
