Gosh Carol. I hope you'll have a stern word with your roofers. No professional roofing team leaves a roof exposed like that. They could have covered exposed areas with a tarp if rain was forecast. In fact, it begs the question, with long range forecasts available these days, why they exposed the roof at all if the weather was changeable.
I agree Mark. I had warned them that morning that the forecast was for 70% rain! There would have been no damage had a horribly strong North wind had not come up and ripped the tarpaper (not the old type; don't know what this new is called), off half of the roof. This paper would have protected the roof & interior from damage, without the wind.

In that case, it's incompetence. They should have known and come better prepared. Or, the could have used the better roofing wrap which would not have ripped. Or, the could have used a tarp or two Or, they could have used some ply and tie-downs. Or better yet, could have looked at the weather forecast and delayed leaving it all exposed.

I deal with this sort of stuff quite often in my line of work.

better than that

you may want to see if you have any grounds to sue for damages if your insurance doesn't compensate you adequately

know a good attorney

usually first interviews are free

Before enriching a lawyer you may simply ask the roofers for a discount, Carol.

Personally, I would first threaten them with you doing just that, and then - on the basis that should you win, which is likely, then they will be hit with both the cost of the reparations AND the legal costs - they might well roll over and repair/replace all the damage (etc.) more quickly.

Oh my - glad your computer came thru safely. It's always amazing how much stuff is on them that we depend on (to varying degrees, of course)... Good luck with the roofers and that mess...

Folks, I have no intention of suing or threatening the roofer(s). Everything turned out ok, the roof is beautiful, and I just want to move on. Here in the US, people sue at the drop of a hat; I'm not one of them.

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts, it was most appreciated!

Carol. Glad everything worked out okay. I know that where you live you have to go through the sticks to get there and you need to be able to look out for yourself until help arrives. I still have a landline too. You cannot kill that system.

Absolutely, a landline is a must! Cell phones do not get a signal here because of the mountains. Help is a good 30 minutes away, in case of an emergency.

Just like where I live. Glad it all worked out OK, Carol. Post an image of the new roof so we can all see it was worth it!

The new roof certainly looks like a solid piece of work. I guess it will have snow to contend with soon.
