Binocular/Scope specs

I'm looking to get either a spotting scope or a set of Binoculars.
But I am really confused with the specs.. ie. 10x40, 30x50 etc etc

What exactly do they stand for? Any way to translate this into mm?

Is there anything i need to watch out for? recommendations?

The first number is the magnification. 10X would be like a 500mm lens on a 35mm camera. The second number is the size of the objective in mm. The larger the glass, the brighter the image. So a 40mm objective is going to be brighter than a 32mm.

I would buy the best quality that you can afford and stay away from lesser know brands. My experience is that the high priced brands are high priced for a reason - they are much better! Get a Pentax brand of binoculars!

Anyone have any experience with this model?
