I should have clarified that, it was when I had mine that everything I had in it was Apple priority. But from what I've read and heard, that is not the way it is now. I do remember when Apple went Intel and Apple owners could run Apple OS along side Windows if they wanted.

When did Apple start charging for the OS upgrades/updates? Mine were free when I had my PowerPC.

Don't get me wrong here guys, I'd love to own a tower Apple, but they are just too expensive for me. My PowerPC cost me $2500 in 1992, But I don't like books. I like towers. My last build cost me about $500.

While in college in the early to late 90s, I worked in the English department and got that job because I knew Apple, that's all they used there. So, don't count me out just because I use a PC now.

And I knew before I started typing my first answer,, I should not, I repeat,, not get into this discussion. LOL
Apple doesn't charge for OS updates. I've never paid for an OS update on my 2010 iMac, unless it was so long ago in the past I don't remember it. My guess is Windows has released and charged for at least 3 or 4 iterations since the last one Apple charged for, probably more than that. I'm even editing with my version of Aperture, $279 when first released, an $79 upgrade from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3, still runs like charm even though it was discontinued and no longer supported 5 years ago. You just don't see that in the Windows world. It's now cost me about $50 a year to run Aperture.

I'm the OP and I would like to thank all for relating their experiences, their perspectives and the pros and cons that determined their personal selection of computer systems...PC or Apple. The input was valuable and I might add, that is what I like about the Pentax forum. Much PF discussion that goes on in this forum is well considered, thoughtful and of value... information.

My wife, bless her, figured out after many hours how to bring our PC software back to a reliable operating level after that last unsought, automatic 'update' . She's not a computer nerd, but she has a strong math/science academic background that invariably aids her in figuring out things, both logical and illogical. Sometimes I think she would of made a fine code breaker.

However, we have read the answers from all and intend to keep this thread in mind, to review again, when the next inevitable 'update' takes place and our frustration level has reached the point where enough becomes enough and it becomes decision time.

Our computer is a good Samsung laptop that seems fine. It wasn't a cheapy...so I don't think it is our computer, but then I'm no expert..

My wife also has an Apple Tablet and she is quite happy with that.

Thank you again.

Les

The same happened to us with my wife's almost new iMac. She upgraded, Aperture broke. After bit of troubleshooting I deleted it and reloaded it. It works fine now. Sometimes when you update all the necessary files get their locations changed and a reload solves the problem. I was going to buy new editing software, but lying in bed at night you think of things to try that may not have been apparent when first faced with the problem.

My first response is shock it doesn't work, dismay it doesn't work anger it doesn't work, after a while I start trouble shooting the problem. Same with every system I've ever worked on.

They have never charged for updates as far as I know. Always free.

I count no one out. I firmly believe in vanilla and chocolate, horses for courses, and every other cliche regarding choice.

Windows upgrades are not free up, well, until Windows 10. Now however, you can get Windows 10 any variety for free. This is the very first OS, that you could download and install on any system running Windows 7, 8. or 8.1 for free. I however, do not like Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 either which is on my laptop. I am still running Windows 7 on this computer for now.

I'm not sure why some do not like Windows 10. It's far more stable than any previous version of Windows and start-up is near instant with a solid-state drive. There are never any "blue screens" and the thing works well with no need for computer tech support.

The only time I have any issue is when trying to share information with people with Apples. Until very recently, the specialist software I use for my work was only available on PC, so it makes no sense for me to (now) migrate to a different operating system.

The only thing I don't like about Windows is the Edge or Internet Explorer browsers. For that reason, I use Firefox or Chrome. I dislike Chrome because it's resources hungry, but it's still preferable to Edge in my view.

It's all the little things that Microsoft insists you do that you don't want to do on a computer you own, not them, that keeps me from going to Windows 10. I know some computer techs that use Windows Enterprise and they said this version isn't so intrusive and when I finally have to change, I will use that one.

Examples?

I don't have to "do" anything. The thing just works. Runs all my software faultlessly without me having to "do" anything at all.

Let's not play this "show me" thing. Microsoft is intrusive when it comes to windows 10, when a computer tech can see it, it's there. If you can't see it, then you are not worried the information Microsoft is getting out of your computer when you use it, evidently you don't care enough Mark.

Maybe this will explain it:

Windows 10 tracks your location even when setting is switched off

Being intrusive and me having to "do" things are very different concerns. As to how well they're able to track me: They don't do a particularly good job. While my phone manages very well to know where I am, both in terms of GPS and cellular tower location, my laptop, most often, displays where my network service provider is and not where I am.

As noted prior, I don't have to "do" anything - the thing just works!
If Microsoft thinks I live at my internet service provider's office - good luck to them!

You're still quite safe with that for now. Extended support ends on 14 January 2020.

No free lunches on Macs either... Dear Apple: Your upgrade policy sucks | InfoWorld I see the forum posts of Mac uses on the music production sites I also frequent where they are ticked off at this very situation.

I got WinXP for dirt cheap, then used that to get a full license to Windows 7, then used that to get a free upgrade to Windows 10. I think I spent maybe 100 dollars total. Even if I hadn't, it would have been around 300 dollars out of my pocket for eighteen years (and counting) of computing. That doesn't bother me.

I will say I wish Microsoft would just support old OS with patches and general support. Because I would have stuck with Win7. Win10 does the OSX thing of periodic, micro updates.. and the tablet-like tiles GUI design is like it or leave it.

Yes, but my point was, Mark, that I don't like the idea that Windows 10, sends information back to Microsoft about what I do on my computer. I'm locked and blocked on this Windows 7, Microsoft doesn't get anything from my computer nor does any one else.

The issue with Win7 is no support for the past couple generation of processors, no directx 12, and a few other things. So even if you use that extra year, you're out of options if you get a new computer because, without some hacks, suspect user-made patching and junk.

Forced obsolescence means they can resell you something. Or at least could. It will be interesting in another 3 to 5 years to see what happens with Windows 10 since technically there were supposed to be no more new versions of it (as it is now considered a 'service').

I bought my Windows 7 Professional 64 bit from Newegg.com for $139.00.

I don't buy off the shelf computers, mee, I build my own.

We can argue this to the ends of earth and still comes down to what ever the OP wants, not what we want or prefer.

When I had a Mac, I argued with anyone who owned a PC, that Mac/Apple was better for graphics, now I see myself doing the same with my PC. So I'm done here. Let's get this back on topic just for the same of the OP. Please.
