A wise person once said to me...

QuoteQuote:
There is no such thing as a bad photo - there are only "different" photos.
This is a piece of advice I am apt to repeat when talking to photographers even more amateur than I - and I personally find it good advise to live by.

Another couplet I'm fond of is:
QuoteQuote:
There is no such thing as a perfect work of art
and relatedly:
QuoteQuote:
All art can be improved
I took took this to mean that one can find room for improvement (and thus, criticism) in even the greatest works of art - one may always strive for perfection, but not one amongst us may ever attain it.

I found these three paraquotes insightful and I find they are very useful not just in journey as a novice photographer, but in other aspects of my life as well - so I thought I would share them that others may benefit from such wisdom (even if I can't remember the original quotes, or by whom they were writ!). I find them particularly useful when I am asking for opinions on my work (both in and out of photography) - it also helps to remember that most people aren't mean on purpose - Hanlon's Razor often covers that side of things though!

Might anybody else like to share any insightful or profound comments or quotes that you feel affected you in some way?

George Bernard Shaw, famous English playwright said and I quote ..."A photographer is like a cod, which produces a million eggs in order that one may reach maturity.”

Also, George Bernard Shaw said to Sir Winston Churchill. Both men were famous wits, along with all their other accomplishments.

" I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend ... if you have one."

Sir Winston responded to Shaw;

"Cannot possibly attend first night; will attend second, if there is one."

This last quote doesn't have anything to do with photography, but I think it's funny.

My father told me, "Never follow your wife into the kitchen during an argument. She knows where all the knives are."

The best piece of relationship advice I ever received: “It’s better to not be IN a relationship than to wish you could get OUT of one.”

learn the meaning of compromise

and live it

very few things in life and relationships are truly worth saying: " my way or the highway "

IMHO, YMMV

If desired perfection is not in the realm of possibility, then it is not an objective standard of measurement. We can only strive for perfection in what can be achieved, not some arbitrary standard beyond reality. For example, perpetual motion may be a perfect standard of energy efficiency, but since it is not physically possible to achieve, then it is unrealistic to use it as a standard.

I think I have posted this in the past, from the first curator of photography at MOMA.

"The truth is that anybody can make a photograph.
The trouble is not that photographs are hard to make.
The trouble is that they are hard to make intelligent and interesting”
John Szarkowski 2000 1925-2007

Also, there was a quote from a NG photographer editor, paraphrased:
Anyone can take one great photograph. The key to being a good photographer is to take great photographs on a consistent, repeated basis.

From another NG photographer - whom I can not remember:
If you want to take better pictures, you have to stand in front of interesting subjects.
