My new toy! :D

My newest toy....

I wanted a SMALL laptop to bring to work...

Acer Aspire One "Netbook"

It's actually not bad at all!

9.75x6.5x1.25in (yes thats a normal size mouse and USB sticks next to it!)

1024x600 screen
1.6ghz cpu
1 gig ram
120 gig HD
3 USB ports
1 SD "storage port"
1 multi card reader
80% size keyboard
Win XP (linux version available)
External monitor connector
Wireless B/G and wired LAN

I have it running photoshop without a hiccup (well, except for the small screen of course!)

Should be a great "field" machine to dump my SD cards!

All that for $375can at Best Buy!

I bought it as a toy to pass the time at work (can't always be buying lenses!) but I got a feeling it's going to be a lot more usefull than I thought.

Pat

Nope has a fan, but with the latest bios it only comes on when needed.

(and honestly I don't think it's that noisy when it does run!)

I got it running linux with the Backtrack-3 bootable CD installed on a USB key ohhh this thing is fun!

I've been looking for small laptops for when I travel, but all had small HD...but 120HD would do nicely. Whats the weight like?

Quite light!

I just checked it out on my kitchen scale: 1.06 kilos...

I got nearly 2 hours with the battery it came with, and they sell a "long lasting" battery which is heavier, but is supposed to last up to 6 hours.

I like that I can just throw it in my duffle bag when going to work and not have to lug around my full size beast of a laptop.

Obviously running basic functions in PS, nothing fancy (I haven't had time to try anything fancy yet)... bridge, raw import, resizing, playing with colours, sharpening...

Of course everything is a little longer than on my main machine (3ghz gual core, 4gigs ram, fast HD's) thats to be expected... there is only so much 1.6ghz and 1gig ram can do. But it is quite usable. I find the small screen to be more an issue than the speed.

Or invest some time in a Linux installation and never worry about using more than 200mb of RAM ever again! lol
Seriously, these machines are hot and Acer has got a winner here, unlike the other Acer laptops I have.

Congrats Pat. If it ever runs hot, you won't be far from help and assistance.

BTW, I hope you realise, it will get heavier the more data you put on that HD - lol
Enjoy.

Dave ... Unfortunately, with the current BIOS they can only take a max of 1.5gb

Innershell ... I repartitionned the HD and got it dual booting But thats only for fun, my main OS is XP.

JC ... Well, with a partitionned HD I balance the weight It doesn't really run that hot, but I can tell you it sells like hotcakes!

Which distro did you put on that little thing? I would have put Fedora or Debian since they run really well with minimal resources.

Cute 'puter Pat! Tell me, do you have to put your fingers in a pencil sharpener to use that keyboard? Not near as bad as those cell phone keypads but tiny none the less.

Looks like fun - enjoy!

Pat,
You can update the BIOS and run higher RAM Just go on line to manufacture and get updated BIOS. In fact you can update with out having the ram to install at this time but these machines are easily upgraded.
You did get a sweet deal on this and a very good product in deed.
